If you report someone on Telegram, will they know? Not from Telegram itself
Short answer. If you report someone on Telegram, will they know? Not from Telegram. In-app reports go to Telegram's moderators without the reporter's name, and Telegram sends the reported person no notice. They can still guess: a limited account, a deleted message, a scam label or a blocked channel shows that someone complained. No published report count bans a channel. Moderators act on the violation, not the volume.
The question has two halves because Telegram runs two kinds of reporting. The in-app Report button, the spam bar in private chats and the @notoscam bot feed Telegram's moderators and pass no reporter identity to the other side. Formal notices, such as an EU Digital Services Act notice, a copyright notice or a police complaint, need your name, and a name on a notice can travel.
Reports also compete for attention on a very large service. Pavel Durov said in March 2025 that Telegram had passed 1 billion monthly active users, and Telegram's moderation overview counts 27,325,711 groups and channels blocked so far in 2026. This guide covers what a reported user, group or channel can see, what happens after a report, why searching how many reports to ban Telegram channel pages leads nowhere, and how admins ban someone from their own chats. It is not legal advice.
If you report someone on Telegram, will they know?
No notification names you. Telegram's privacy policy describes moderators checking messages "that were reported to them by their recipients", and none of its report flows includes a step that informs the sender. What the reported person can see is the consequence of a report, if moderators act on it, and sometimes the reporter's own behaviour, such as a sudden block.
The table answers "if you report someone on Telegram, will they know?" route by route, listing what each report leaves visible on the reported side. A visible signal shows that something happened. None of the signals names the person behind it.
| Report route | What the reported side can see | Names the reporter? |
|---|---|---|
| Spam bar in a chat from a non-contact (Block user on Android, Report Spam on iPhone) | The reporter goes quiet: no profile photo, "last seen a long time ago", one tick on new messages. These are the signs of an ordinary block | No |
| Report on a message, group or channel | Nothing, unless moderators act. Then a removed message or a blocked chat | No |
| Spam reports a moderator confirms | A limited account that cannot message strangers. @SpamBot confirms the limit | No |
| Many users flagging an account or channel as fake or scam | A public SCAM or FAKE badge and a warning shown to other users | No |
| @notoscam impersonation report | A label or removal, if confirmed | Not documented |
| EU notice at telegram.org/dsa-report | A statement of reasons if content is restricted | Only where strictly necessary (DSA Article 17) |
| Copyright notice to [email protected] | A removed post or a blocked channel | Not documented; the notice carries your details |
| Police complaint that leads to a court order | Court papers and evidence disclosure | Often, through legal process |
Blocking is the signal people misread most. Telegram's FAQ says "last seen a long time ago" appears for anyone inactive for more than a month and is always shown to blocked users, so the reported person cannot tell a block from a report. The spam bar does both at once, which is why people notice the block and assume a report.
Other platforms make the same promise with stated exceptions. Meta tells Facebook users that reports are anonymous except for intellectual property reports, the carve-out covered in the guide to reporting a Facebook account, and the guide to reporting someone on Snapchat covers how Snap handles the same question. Telegram's FAQ and privacy policy contain no explicit reporter-privacy statement that we could find. The anonymity comes from how the report flow is built.
What happens when you report a Telegram channel?
When you report a Telegram channel, the report joins a moderation queue that also receives machine-learning detections. A moderator or an automated system checks the reported posts against Telegram's Terms of Service. The outcome ranges from no action, which arrives without any reply, to removed posts, a public warning label, a restriction on certain platforms, or a full block of the channel.
Telegram describes the system itself: "Since 2015, moderation has combined user reports with proactive monitoring powered by machine learning," and AI moderation tools were added in early 2024. Telegram's spam FAQ adds that "all such reports are also checked by human moderators", and that a first spam limit usually lasts "a few days or so", with longer periods for repeat offences.
| Outcome | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| No action | Nothing changes, and Telegram sends the reporter no reply |
| Message removed | The reported posts disappear; the channel stays up |
| Account limit | The account can message mutual contacts only, for days at first, longer after repeats |
| Telegram account ban | The account is deleted and its number banned; the Android app shows "This phone number is banned." at login |
| Telegram channel ban | A notice replaces the posts for everyone, or only on iPhone and Android if the restriction is platform-specific |
| Telegram group ban | The group stops opening for its members, and the invite link stops working |
| Warning label | A SCAM or FAKE badge on the profile; the account keeps working |
The platform-specific case confuses people. Telegram's API lets a restriction apply to "ios", "android" or "all" platforms, which is why a channel blocked on an iPhone can still open in the desktop app. A channel that has vanished on one device but opens on another was restricted, not banned.
Telegram's moderation overview counts 27,325,711 groups and channels blocked in 2026, including 440,679 for child sexual abuse material and 182,986 for terrorist content. Individual user accounts are not counted.Telegram moderation overview, read 9 October 2026
How many reports to ban Telegram channel, group or account?
None. Telegram has never published a report threshold for banning a channel, group or account, and its documentation describes moderators reviewing reported content rather than counting reports. One report that shows child abuse material or a working scam can end a channel. Thousands of reports about a channel that breaks no rule should end nothing. Volume can change how fast a channel is reviewed and whether it gets a label. It does not decide the verdict.
Telegram's API documentation is the only place where volume is written down. The fake flag on a channel or user means it was "reported by many users as a fake or scam", and the iPhone app turns that flag into a warning that "Many users reported this account as a scam or a fake account". So the documented result of many reports is a badge that warns other users. A ban still needs a moderator's decision.
That is why searches for how many reports to ban Telegram account holders, or how many reports to ban Telegram group chats, turn up figures with no source behind them. Sellers of mass-report packages quote the same unsourced figures. The evidence against their claims is set out in the review of Telegram mass-report services.
Platforms that publish report data point the same way. Bluesky's 2025 transparency report counted 9.97 million reports from 1.24 million reporters, and 72.9% of reported accounts were reported more than once. Bluesky's safety team still states that mass reporting alone does not lead to suspensions. The same review-not-tally rule applies when people try to take down a Snapchat account, seek a LinkedIn account takedown, or attempt getting someone banned on Roblox.
Repeated reports can also fail outright. In June 2025 Malaysia's communications regulator, MCMC, went to court over two Telegram channels after what it called Telegram's failure to address content that had been "repeatedly reported", and the communications minister said Telegram had acted on fewer than half of MCMC's takedown requests. A regulator's repeated reports did not end two channels. A crowd of user reports is weaker still.
The useful version of the question, then, is not how many reports to ban Telegram channel owners. It is which written rule the channel breaks and whether the report puts the proof in front of a moderator.
When can your name reach the person you reported?
Your name can reach the reported person only through formal routes that require it. An EU Digital Services Act notice, a copyright notice and a police complaint all carry the complainant's identity, and each can pass it on in limited cases. In-app reports, the spam bar and @notoscam ask for nothing beyond your account, and Telegram documents no process for disclosing who reported whom.
EU notices are the clearest case. Telegram's notice form at telegram.org/dsa-report asks for your name, contact details and an explanation, and Telegram's EU terms say it may suspend people who repeatedly file unfounded notices. Article 17 of the Digital Services Act then requires a statement of reasons to the restricted user, which may include "where strictly necessary, the identity of the notifier". The reported user usually learns that a notice existed, and rarely who sent it.
A copyright notice to [email protected] must carry the rights holder's contact details. Telegram publishes no rule on forwarding notices, so the guide to Telegram copyright notices recommends assuming the channel may learn who complained, or filing through an agent. X says so outright: its trademark form warns that a report can be shared with the account owner, as the X impersonation report guide explains.
A police complaint is the route where anonymity is weakest by design. If an investigation leads to charges, the defence can usually see the evidence file, and the complaint is part of that file. That trade is often worth making for threats, extortion or child abuse material, but the person filing should make the decision knowingly.
How do you report a Telegram channel, group or supergroup?
To report a Telegram channel or group, open its profile, tap the three-dot menu, choose Report and pick the reason that matches the content, then select the offending messages if asked. Single messages are reported by long-pressing them and choosing Report. Telegram's servers set the reason list. The API defines ten reasons, including spam, violence, child abuse, illegal drugs, personal details and copyright.
Copy the link first
Save the t.me/name link and the link to each bad message, such as t.me/name/1234. A blocked channel shows only a notice, and your evidence goes with it.
Report the channel from its profile
To report Telegram channel content as a whole, use the profile menu and choose the closest reason. Then report the two or three worst messages one by one, because a report that points at messages gives the moderator the proof.
Treat a supergroup the same way
A basic group holds up to 200 members and a supergroup up to 200,000, according to Telegram's API documentation. To report a Telegram supergroup, use the same profile menu, then report individual messages. In a busy supergroup the profile report alone gives a moderator little to check.
Use the spam option for spam
When a stranger adds you to a scam or spam group, the bar at the top offers to report spam and leave. A Telegram group report spam action from that bar sends the group to moderators and removes you from it in one step.
Block the person if the problem is personal
Reporting does not stop someone from messaging you. Block the account as well, and keep the chat until you have saved the evidence.
The Telegram report group menu looks slightly different on Android, iPhone and desktop, and the reason labels change between versions. The full walkthrough for each app sits in the guide to reporting a Telegram account, group or channel, and reports aimed at individual users and bots are covered in reporting someone on Telegram.
Can you report Telegram group without joining?
To report a Telegram group without joining, open its public t.me link. Telegram shows a preview of public groups and channels, and current apps include Report in the preview's menu. For a private group you cannot open, report Telegram group link details by email: send [email protected] the invite link, a description of the content and any screenshots a member gave you. EU residents can use the web form at telegram.org/dsa-report, which needs no Telegram account.
Where does a Telegram illegal content report go?
A Telegram illegal content report goes through the in-app Report button first, because that attaches the messages. Child sexual abuse material also goes to [email protected] and to a hotline such as NCMEC's CyberTipline or the Internet Watch Foundation. Threats, extortion and fraud with losses go to the police. Since September 2024, Telegram's FAQ has said that "All Telegram apps have 'Report' buttons" for illegal content, including in private chats.
TechCrunch reported that change on 5 September 2024, days after Pavel Durov's arrest in France. Before the rewrite, the FAQ said Telegram did not process requests about private chats. The table sets out where each kind of content should go.
| Content | Report in the app as | Also send to |
|---|---|---|
| Child sexual abuse material | Child abuse. Do not screenshot, save or forward it | [email protected], and NCMEC (US) or the IWF (UK) |
| Intimate images shared without consent | Pornography or personal details | StopNCII, the police, and the host of any copies |
| Home address, phone number, documents | Personal details | [email protected] with the message links |
| Threats or extortion | Violence | The police, with saved evidence |
| Drug sales | Illegal drugs | [email protected]; the police where you live |
| Terrorist content | Violence | [email protected]; the national police |
To report a Telegram page for illegal content from outside the app, email [email protected] with the t.me link, the message numbers and the law or rule the content breaks. A Telegram report abuse email works without an account, which matters when the person harmed cannot see the channel. For a telegram report illegal content case involving leaked intimate images, the copies outside Telegram need their own removal requests, which the guide to removing leaked content walks through.
When to report Telegram group to police
Police reports make sense when money, threats, extortion or children are involved. Bring the t.me links, the group or user ID, screenshots with dates, payment records and any wallet addresses. Section 8.3 of Telegram's privacy policy says that if Telegram receives a valid order from judicial authorities confirming that someone is a suspect in a criminal case, it may disclose that person's IP address and phone number, and that it lists such disclosures in a transparency report.
Those disclosures rose after the policy changed in September 2024. According to 404 Media, Telegram handed over data on 2,253 users in response to 900 US requests in 2024, against 108 users from 14 requests between January and September. A police report gets the data. An in-app report does not.
Where do you report a Telegram scammer or fake account?
Report a Telegram scammer in the app first, then to @notoscam, Telegram's bot for scam and impersonation reports. If money was lost, report to the police and your bank as well. For a fake account that copies you, Telegram's FAQ names the same bot: "If a scammer is pretending to be you, please contact @NoToScam." Telegram has no web form for impersonation.
Where to report Telegram scammer activity outside Telegram depends on the country. In the US, the FBI's IC3 recorded more than 1 million complaints and $20.8 billion in losses in its 2025 report, with investment fraud the costliest category at $8.6 billion. The FTC's 2025 data puts social media at about 30% of fraud loss reports, worth $2.1 billion. The step-by-step for reporting a scam on Telegram lists the bots and addresses for each case.
Telegram scam reporting works best when the report names the mechanism: a fake investment group, a fake support account, a payment link. A Telegram scam group takedown moves faster when the group sends people to a phishing site, because the site can be removed through its host and registrar even while the group survives. The phishing takedown process covers that route. Scammers often run the same script across several apps, and the guide to reporting a TikTok scammer covers the other end of such a scheme.
How to report a fake Telegram account
Open the profile and use Report if the option appears, or block the account and report spam from the chat. Then send @notoscam the @username, the real account it copies and proof of who you are. A Telegram fake account report succeeds most often when the profile copies a public figure or a brand and the evidence shows both accounts side by side. Because Telegram labels accounts that many users flag, a FAKE badge can appear before any removal.
Other platforms ask for more. TikTok's US impersonation form asks for a photo of the person holding ID, as the guide on how to report a fake TikTok account explains, and Facebook runs a dedicated form covered in the Facebook impersonation report guide. Telegram's bot asks for less and tells you less: there is no case number and no reply.
How do you ban someone from a Telegram group or channel?
Only admins can ban someone from a Telegram group or channel. Open the member list, long-press or right-click the person, and choose to remove or ban them. A ban in a supergroup or channel keeps the person out: Telegram's Bot API says a banned user "will not be able to return to the chat on their own using invite links, etc., unless unbanned first". An ordinary member can only report and leave.
How to ban someone from Telegram group chats
Use the delete dialog on a spam message
Long-press the message, choose Delete, and tick the options to ban the user, report spam and delete all of their messages. One dialog bans the account, reports it and clears its posts.
Or remove the member from the list
Open the group's info, find the member, long-press or right-click, and remove them. In a supergroup the removed user lands on the removed-users list in the group's permissions, and stays out until an admin takes them off it.
Replace the invite link
Revoke the old invite link and create a new one, so a spammer who saved the link cannot send others in.
Bans can be temporary. In the Bot API, a ban set for more than 366 days or less than 30 seconds from now counts as permanent, which is how moderation bots handle timed bans. In a basic group, a removed member's old messages stay visible to them unless the admin deletes them. In supergroups and channels, the removal always cuts off the history.
How to ban someone from Telegram channel comments
Channel comments live in a linked discussion group, not in the channel. Removing a subscriber from the channel's subscriber list does not stop that person from commenting. The ban has to be applied in the discussion group as well. Groups with 200 or more members can also switch on Telegram's Aggressive Anti-Spam, introduced in December 2022, which deletes suspected spam automatically and lets admins mark false positives.
Asking how to ban someone in Telegram as a whole has a short answer: you cannot. An admin's ban covers one chat. Only Telegram can ban someone Telegram-wide, and the routes above are the only way to ask. Anyone who promises to show you how to ban someone from Telegram entirely is selling the report packages described earlier. An admin ban is also not anonymous in the way a report is: the removed person knows which group removed them, and other admins can see who did it in the group's Recent actions log.
How to take down Telegram channel content when reports fail
To take down a Telegram channel that reports have not removed, change the evidence, not the volume. Report the specific messages that break a rule, send a written notice to [email protected] or an EU notice, use copyright or privacy law where it applies, and go to the police or a regulator for crimes. A Telegram takedown is never guaranteed: Telegram alone decides, and mirror channels can reappear within hours.
The Malaysian case shows the mirror problem. When the Edisi Siasat channel was blocked on 20 June 2025, a channel called "Edisi Siasat 2.0", believed to be run by the same admin, appeared that evening and passed 2,000 followers within hours, according to Malay Mail. A takedown plan needs a step for copies: save the admin's handles and wording, and report mirrors by message as they appear.
People who search "report telegram group reddit" are usually looking for proof from someone who tried. Telegram's design explains the silence they find: there is no outcome message, so most people who report a channel never learn whether the report did anything. Check the link a week later instead of filing again, and drop the hunt for how many reports to ban Telegram channel pages: no figure exists to aim at.
Facebook Pages follow the same principle of rule over volume, as the guide on how to take down a page on Facebook shows. When a channel targets you by name, posts your documents or keeps returning under new handles, a documented case usually does more than more reports. A content removal service builds that case across Telegram, the hosts behind any links and search results, and Clearline's content removal casework states up front which parts depend on Telegram's decision.
Frequently asked questions
If you report someone on Telegram, will they know it was you?
Telegram does not tell the reported person who reported them, and in-app reports carry no reporter name to the other side. The person may notice a consequence, such as a limited account or a removed message, and can sometimes guess the reporter from context, for example when the report concerns a private chat between two people.
How many reports to ban Telegram channel or group?
There is no number, and asking how many reports to ban Telegram channel or group chats assumes a counter Telegram does not run. Moderators decide on the content and the rule it breaks. The only documented effect of many reports is a FAKE or SCAM label, which Telegram's API describes as "reported by many users as a fake or scam". A ban still needs a moderator's decision.
Does Telegram tell you the result of a report?
No. Telegram sends no outcome message for in-app reports or for reports made through @notoscam. The only way to check is to open the reported link again later. A channel that opens on desktop but not on an iPhone has been restricted on that platform rather than banned.
Can you report a Telegram group without joining it?
Yes. Public groups and channels open as a preview from their t.me link, and current apps offer Report from the preview's menu. For private groups, email [email protected] with the invite link and a description, or use telegram.org/dsa-report in the EU, which does not need a Telegram account.
What happens to a Telegram account after spam reports?
If a moderator confirms the reports, the account is limited and can message only mutual contacts. Telegram's spam FAQ says a first limit usually lasts a few days, with longer periods for repeat offences, and that people who think the limit is a mistake can contact @SpamBot.
Does blocking someone on Telegram report them?
No. Blocking stops messages and calls but sends nothing to Telegram's moderators. The block dialog offers a separate report-spam option, and only that option sends a report. The blocked person sees "last seen a long time ago", the same status shown for anyone inactive for more than a month.
Can you ban someone from all of Telegram?
No. A group or channel admin can ban someone only from that chat. Removing an account from Telegram entirely is Telegram's decision, made after reports, notices or legal orders show a breach of its Terms of Service.
Being targeted by a Telegram channel or group?
Send the channel or group links, what you have already reported and any replies. The review sets out which rule the content breaks, which route can reach it, and which parts stay with Telegram's moderators.
