How to report a Telegram account, group or channel, and what each ban removes

Short answer. How to report a Telegram account depends on what it is. A group or channel has its own Report item: open it, tap its name and then More on iPhone, or the three-dot menu on Android and desktop, choose Report and pick a reason. A person’s account is reported through their messages or the spam bar. Anything public can also go to [email protected] with its t.me link. Only Telegram can block a channel or ban an account.

Most searches for how to report telegram account problems are about one of three things: a person, a group or a channel. Telegram handles each one differently. Groups, channels and bots carry a Report item of their own, while a person is judged through what they sent, so a report filed against the wrong object tells the moderator less than it could.

The other half of the question is what happens next. A user cannot ban anything on Telegram, and Telegram does not delete a channel because someone asked. Moderators block groups and channels and limit or ban accounts, and Telegram publishes running totals for the first of those.

Telegram’s moderation page counted 26,896,392 groups and channels blocked in 2026 when we read it on 2 October 2026, against 26,466,911 on 25 September: roughly 61,000 a day across that week. The count covers groups and channels only, not user accounts.Telegram Moderation Overview, telegram.org/moderation, read 25 September and 2 October 2026.

How to report a Telegram account, group or channel: which is it?

Start by naming the object, because each one has its own Report path. A channel broadcasts one way to subscribers, a group lets members post, and an account is one person or one bot. Channels, groups and bots carry Report in their own menu. A person’s account has no profile Report item on Android or iPhone, so it is reported through what that person sent.

Banner reading Three objects, one review: how to report a Telegram account, group or channel, three runs, one gate.
Only the person’s account arrives by a turn: it reaches review through the messages it sent, never through a profile button.
ObjectReport item on the objectWhere to find itWhat Telegram can apply
A person’s accountNo, on Android and iPhoneThe message menu, the spam bar, or @notoscam for impersonationA limit on messaging strangers, a scam or fake label, a ban
A botYesThe bot’s profile, then ReportRemoval of the bot
A groupYesThe group’s name, then More on iPhone; the three-dot menu on Android and desktopA scam or fake label, or a block on the whole group
A channelYesThe same menu as a groupA label, a restriction on some platforms, or a block
Any public linkNot neededAn email to [email protected]The same decisions, made by the same moderators

The split is an app choice, not a limit in Telegram’s systems. Telegram’s API has a method to “report a peer for violation of telegram’s Terms of Service,” and a peer can be a user, a group or a channel. The apps expose that method on bots, groups and channels and send person-level reports through the message menu, which our guide to reporting someone on Telegram walks through message by message.

Telegram’s API defines ten reasons for reporting a whole profile, group or channel: spam, violence, pornography, child abuse, copyright, impersonation, illegal drugs, personal details, an irrelevant geogroup, and other.Telegram API documentation, account.reportPeer method and ReportReason type, core.telegram.org, read September and October 2026.

Can you report a Telegram account as a whole?

Yes, though not from the profile. Reporting telegram account holders as a whole works through three doors: their worst messages, the spam bar on a chat they opened, and @notoscam when the account poses as you or someone else. Each confirmed report lands on the account, and repeated ones can end in a limit or a ban on the phone number behind it.

  1. Report the messages that show the problem

The answer to how to report account on Telegram starts in the chat. Tap the message on Android, press and hold it on iPhone, or right-click it on desktop, then choose Report and follow the reasons. File one report for each message that shows a different problem.

  2. Use the spam bar if a stranger wrote first

A chat opened by someone outside your contacts shows a bar across the top. On iPhone it reads Report Spam; on Android it reads Block user, and the block dialog carries a Report spam checkbox.

  3. Send impersonation to @notoscam

Telegram’s own bot, named Report Impersonation, takes reports about accounts posing as you. Include the t.me link to the fake account and to your real one.

  4. Email what lives in public

If the account has a public username, send its t.me link and links to any public posts to [email protected]. That route works from any mail account, without the app.

Searches for how to report account in Telegram Desktop or Telegram Web get the same answer as the phone apps: right-click a message, then Report. Outside the EU there is no web form to report telegram account holders, so for anyone without the app the email address is the only door.

“If the moderators decide that the messages deserved this, the account becomes limited temporarily,” Telegram’s spam FAQ says of the Report Spam button, and a first limit usually lasts a few days, with longer ones for repeat offences.Telegram Spam FAQ, telegram.org/faq_spam, read 25 September 2026.

That is how to report Telegram account owners who never post anywhere public: through the chat they had with you. Other platforms put the choice on the profile instead. Instagram’s account report sits on every profile, X account reports can name the person rather than one post, TikTok’s Report account option works the same way, and Snapchat keeps Report under Manage Friendship, as our Snapchat reporting guide shows.

How to report a Telegram group on iPhone, Android or desktop

Open the group and choose Report from its menu. On iPhone, tap the group’s name at the top, then the More button, then Report. On Android, Telegram Desktop and Telegram Web, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, then Report. Pick the reason Telegram shows and add a comment when the last screen asks for one.

Banner reading The group, or one member: one run crosses the gate, one turns down out of the band, one stops in dots.
A message report is judged against its sender, not the group; on iPhone the group’s own Report item sits behind More.
DeviceReport the whole groupReport one message in it
iPhone and iPadTap the group’s name, then More, then ReportPress and hold the message, then Report
AndroidThree-dot menu, then ReportTap the message, then Report
Desktop, Web, macOSThree-dot menu, then ReportRight-click the message, then Report

That first row is the whole answer to how to report a group in Telegram on iPhone: the name at the top opens the group’s info page, and Report sits behind More. The reason list that follows comes from Telegram’s servers, so it looks the same on every device and can change without an app update.

How to report telegram group chats well comes down to choosing between the two columns. Report the group when the group itself exists for the problem, such as a scam “investment club” or a group trading stolen data. Report the messages when one member is the problem in an otherwise ordinary group, and the moderator then judges that member. A group report with no messages behind it gives the moderator a name and little else. Discord draws the same line between a server and its members, as our guide to reporting a Discord server shows.

To report a Telegram group, you need it open in the app, which for a private group means still being a member. Leaving first and trying to report telegram group content afterwards is the commonest way to lose the evidence.

Telegram’s API documentation says a basic group “can only have 200 members at max,” while a supergroup supports up to 200,000 members and a channel has no subscriber limit. Apps convert a basic group into a supergroup when an admin uses a feature only supergroups have.Telegram API documentation, core.telegram.org/api/channel, read 2 October 2026.

The distinction matters when Report is missing. tginfo, an independent Telegram help project, notes that a group message “can only be reported if it has already been upgraded from a basic group to a supergroup.” Anyone asking how to report a group on Telegram from a small private group of friends can hit that wall, and the fallback is the person behind the messages: report their account through a private chat with them, or through @notoscam if they impersonate someone.

How to report Telegram channel posts, or the whole channel

Open the channel, then the three-dot menu on Android and desktop, or the channel’s name and then More on iPhone, and choose Report. Telegram serves its reason list, and some reasons ask you to tick the posts that show the problem. Ticking them is the step that matters: the moderator reads those posts, not the channel’s description.

The steps for how to report a Telegram group or channel match at the top level because Telegram builds both on one object. In its API, a channel and a supergroup are the same type, flagged broadcast for a channel and megagroup for a supergroup. Single posts can also be reported from their own menu. Copy each post’s link before you report, so the evidence survives if the channel deletes it.

Private channels follow different rules. The in-app Report works inside private chats, groups and channels, but Telegram’s FAQ still says, in its copyright answer, that “private groups and chats on Telegram are private amongst their participants. We do not process any requests related to them.” Report a private channel from inside, as a subscriber, rather than by email.

On 5 September 2024 Telegram removed that same sentence from its answer about illegal content and replaced it with one saying all Telegram apps have Report buttons for flagging illegal content to moderators.TechCrunch, “Telegram quietly enables users to report private chats to moderators after founder’s arrest,” 5 September 2024.

Three problem types have their own route. A channel reposting your photos, video or writing is a copyright matter for [email protected], the same rights-holder logic behind Instagram copyright reports and any DMCA takedown notice. A channel posing as you or your brand goes to @notoscam, much like an Instagram impersonation report. A channel publishing false claims about you is a legal matter first; none of the ten report reasons covers defamation, which is where the online defamation removal route starts.

How to report a group in Telegram with email

Email [email protected] from any mail account. Telegram’s FAQ asks for links, in the form t.me/… or @…, to the content that needs its moderators’ attention, so lead with the group’s public link and the links to specific messages. Copyright claims go to [email protected] and child abuse material to [email protected], and EU users can file a Digital Services Act notice.

Banner reading A link, not a screenshot: one run passes the gate's aperture, the other breaks into dots short of it.
Telegram’s FAQ asks for t.me addresses or @usernames, because a moderator has to open the content before judging it.
Part of the emailWhat to write
SubjectThe problem and the group’s name, such as “Scam group posing as a bank: t.me/examplename”
LinksThe group’s t.me link, then one t.me link per message, copied from each message’s menu
The ruleWhich part of Telegram’s Terms of Service the content breaks, in one sentence
EvidenceDated screenshots, attached as support for the links rather than in place of them
The requestRemoval of the messages, the group, or both

The same five parts cover how to report telegram account, group and channel problems by email alike. The links do the work because the moderator has to find the content. A screenshot shows what was posted but not where, and a private group has no public link to open, which is why email suits public groups and channels best. Expect silence: tginfo notes that Telegram “almost never responds to sent complaints, even if they are sent not in the application, but by email.”

Telegram’s Digital Services Act guidance says an EU notice must include “your name, contact information and a clear and convincing explanation why the content in question is illegal,” and warns that Telegram may suspend the notices of anyone who repeatedly files manifestly unfounded ones.Telegram, “User guidance for the EU Digital Services Act,” telegram.org/tos/eu-dsa, read 2 October 2026.

EU residents file that notice through telegram.org/dsa-report or the @EURegulation bot, which Telegram names as its single point of contact under the Act. The same split applies when a group runs fake review campaigns: the group is reported to Telegram, while the reviews it produced come down through Google’s own process or, on Trustpilot and similar sites, through each review site’s removal rules.

How to report a group in Telegram without them knowing

An in-app report goes to Telegram’s moderators, not to the group. Nothing in Telegram’s apps tells admins or members that a report was filed or who filed it, and you do not need to leave the group to report it. What can give you away is what you do around the report: leaving straight after, posting about it, or filing a notice that carries your name.

Named routes are the exception. A Digital Services Act notice asks for your name and contact details, a copyright complaint identifies the rights holder, and a police report names you to the police. Telegram publishes no rule on passing those notices on, but none of them is anonymous. Other platforms draw the line elsewhere: Meta acts on some harassment of private adults only when the target reports it, as our Facebook harassment reporting guide explains.

Leaving is the visible step. Depending on the group’s settings, leaving can post a service message every member sees, so report first, save your evidence, and mute the group if you want distance without a trace. Blocking a member is private, and they are not notified. For reporting abuse safely across platforms, see how to report abuse online.

How to ban a Telegram channel, group or account

A user cannot ban a Telegram channel, group or account. Only Telegram’s moderators can block a group or channel or ban an account, and they act on content that breaks a rule. Inside a group you administer, you can ban members yourself. So how to ban a Telegram account, in practice, means filing a report that Telegram’s moderators agree with.

Banner reading No ban from the outside: one run passes the review gate, one turns out early, a dotted run stops short.
An admin’s ban also shuts a member out of the group’s invite links; nothing a non-admin files has that effect.

A group adminMembers of that groupRemove and ban the member, which also stops them rejoining through an invite link
A channel adminSubscribers and commentersRemove them from the subscriber list or the discussion group
Any other userNo oneReport, block, leave

The phrases people search, ban telegram channel or ban telegram account, describe an outcome rather than a tool. Searches for how to ban telegram channel and how to ban telegram group pages you do not run end at the Report item covered above, and how to ban telegram account owners who message you ends at Report plus Block. If you run the group, how to ban a Telegram group member is an admin tool: open the member’s message or their entry in the member list and choose the remove or ban option.

Of the groups and channels Telegram blocked in 2026, 432,048 were blocked over child sexual abuse material and 179,729 over terrorist content, according to its moderation page on 2 October 2026. Telegram says it combines user reports with proactive monitoring and machine-learning tools.Telegram Moderation Overview, telegram.org/moderation, read 2 October 2026.

Account bans run on a separate track from group blocks. Telegram bans an account by its phone number, and blocking a group does not by itself ban the people in it: each member’s account is judged on what that member did. Ban rules differ by platform, too. TikTok counts strikes per removed item, as our guide to getting someone banned on TikTok sets out.

How to get a Telegram channel banned or deleted

Report the posts that break a named Telegram rule, from inside the channel, under the reason that matches. Telegram blocks channels for what they publish: scams, illegal pornographic content, calls to violence, child abuse material. No published report count triggers a block. Telegram does not delete a channel because someone asked; it blocks it, and only the owner can delete it.

Banner reading Hidden on one platform: one run passes the gate, the other stops at an open aperture and resumes in dots.
Telegram’s API can restrict a channel for iOS alone, so the same link still opens on Android and a second report changes nothing.

Telegram’s Terms of Service list what users agree not to do, including “use our service to send spam or scam users” and “promote violence on publicly viewable Telegram channels, bots, etc.” Those lines are the test a report is judged against. To get a Telegram channel banned, the posts you tick have to show one of them; a channel that is merely rude, a competitor, or wrong about you breaks none.

Report volume shows up in one documented place, and it is a label. Telegram’s API marks a channel or supergroup as fake when it “was reported by many users as a fake or scam,” and the apps then warn visitors. The channel keeps running under the label. The same holds for how to get a Telegram group banned: a flood of reports can earn the label, while the block follows the content. Instagram has no report threshold either, as our look at how many reports Instagram needs found.

What you seeWhat it usually means
A notice in place of the channel on every deviceTelegram blocked it
A notice on iPhone only, while Android still opens itA restriction for one platform, not a ban
A SCAM or FAKE label beside the nameFlagged after reports or review; still live
The link stops working, with no noticeThe owner deleted the channel or changed its link

Telegram’s API gives a restricted channel a restriction reason with a platform field that takes values such as “ios, android, wp, all,” a reason code such as “porno” or “terms,” and the error text the app shows in place of the content.Telegram API documentation, restrictionReason constructor, core.telegram.org, read 2 October 2026.

That platform field explains a common false alarm. A channel that vanishes on iPhone but opens on Android has been restricted on one platform, not banned, and reporting it again changes nothing. As for how to get someone's telegram channel deleted: Telegram blocks, and the owner deletes. People who search how to get someones telegram channel deleted usually want the posts gone everywhere, and copies already indexed by Google or reposted on other sites need formal content removal requests of their own.

Reporting a Telegram group to the police

Report the group to Telegram first, then to the police with evidence that survives the group being deleted: its link, the admins’ usernames, dated screenshots and any payment records. In the United States, file with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov, and send child sexual abuse material to NCMEC’s CyberTipline. Police can request user data from Telegram. You cannot.

Searches for how to report telegram group to police mostly come from scam victims, and the evidence that helps them most is the evidence Telegram lets disappear. Admins can delete messages for everyone and a group can vanish overnight, so save copies before anything else:

  • The group’s t.me link and its name exactly as shown, with each admin’s @username.
  • Screenshots showing sender, date and message, scrolled back far enough to show how the contact began.
  • Wallet addresses, transaction IDs and bank or card records.
  • When and how you reported it to Telegram.

Telegram fulfilled 900 United States requests for IP addresses or phone numbers in 2024, affecting 2,253 users. Only 14 of those requests, covering 108 users, came between January and September, before Telegram changed its privacy policy that autumn.404 Media, “Telegram Hands U.S. Authorities Data on Thousands of Users,” January 2025.

Those figures are why a police report now carries weight a user report cannot. A user report can get a group blocked; a valid legal order can identify the people who ran it. The FBI’s 2024 Internet Crime Report logged 859,532 complaints and $16.6 billion in reported losses, and IC3 pools complaints across victims, so a small loss is still worth filing. This is general information, not legal advice.

When reporting a Telegram account or group does not work

Reports fail for three common reasons: the content breaks no Telegram rule, the report names the wrong reason, or the problem sits in a private space Telegram leaves to its members. Telegram sends no outcome for an ordinary report, so silence is not a refusal. Content copied off Telegram stays up whatever Telegram decides.

  • Insults, rivalry and one-sided arguments rarely fit any of the ten report reasons.
  • A blocked owner can open a new channel or account the same day, and each one needs its own report.
  • Once messages are deleted, nothing is left to tick on the Report screen, which is why the screenshots come first.
  • Coordinated report waves add nothing a single evidenced report lacks, and report-bot services carry risks of their own, covered in our look at mass reporting a Telegram account.

Knowing how to report a Telegram account is the first half of the job. The second half is keeping the evidence in a form a moderator, a host or a police officer can act on after Telegram goes quiet.

Frequently asked questions

Does Telegram tell a group or channel who reported it?

No. An in-app report goes to Telegram’s moderators, and nothing in Telegram’s apps shows admins or members that a report was filed or by whom. Named routes such as a Digital Services Act notice or a copyright complaint carry your name, so they are not anonymous, though Telegram publishes no rule about passing them on.

How many reports does it take to ban a Telegram channel?

Telegram publishes no number. Its API marks a channel as fake when it was reported by many users as a fake or scam, which adds a warning label but leaves the channel running. Blocks follow content that breaks Telegram’s rules, so one well-evidenced report can do more than many empty ones.

Can you report a Telegram account or group without the app?

Yes, by email, which is how to report a Telegram account when you have no app to hand. Send the t.me links to the account, group or messages to [email protected] with a short description of the rule they break. EU residents can also file a Digital Services Act notice at telegram.org/dsa-report. Private groups have no public link, so email works best for public content.

Why is there no Report option in my Telegram group?

Check that you opened the group’s menu rather than a member’s profile, which has no Report item on Android or iPhone. A small basic group may also not offer reports until it becomes a supergroup. In that case report the member’s account through a private chat with them, then leave and block.

Does a banned Telegram group ban its members too?

No. Telegram blocks a group as a whole and judges member accounts separately, on what each one sent. Its moderation page counts blocked groups and channels, not accounts. Admins who ran a scam group can still be reported individually through their messages or, for impersonation, through @notoscam.

Reported the group, and it is still running?

Send the group or channel link, what you reported and when. The review sets out which Telegram rule the content breaks, which route decides it, and what can be done about copies that have spread beyond Telegram.
