Instagram impersonation report or copyright report form? Routing fakes, scams and brand abuse

Short answer. File an Instagram impersonation report when an account poses as you, someone you represent or your business: in the app choose Report, then “It’s pretending to be someone else”, or use Instagram’s impersonation form with a photo of your ID. Use the Instagram copyright report form only when the harm is your photos or videos, because that route gives the poster your name and email. Scams, catfish and harassment each take a different menu.

Reputation damage on Instagram rarely arrives as one clean violation. A fake profile copies a founder’s photos, messages the real account’s followers, pitches a crypto “opportunity” and leaves insults under genuine posts, so one campaign touches the impersonation, copyright, fraud and harassment rules at once. Each rule has its own reviewer, its own proof and its own consequences for the person who files. Picking the wrong door costs weeks, and one door, the intellectual property route, discloses the reporter’s identity to the account being reported.

This guide matches each kind of abuse to the report that fits it, using Instagram’s and Meta’s forms as they stood when we opened them on 30 September 2026. Two had moved: the old Instagram copyright report form link now opens a shared Meta intellectual property form, and the harassment form most guides still cite returns a Not Found page. If the account is specifically pretending to be you, the longer guide on personal impersonation cases covers identity proof and escalation in depth.

Meta says it took down 10.9 million Facebook and Instagram accounts associated with criminal scam centres in 2025, and removed more than 159 million scam ads, 92% of them before anyone reported them.Meta Newsroom, “Meta Launches New Anti-Scam Tools, Deploys AI Technology to Fight Scammers and Protect People,” 11 March 2026.

Instagram impersonation report or copyright report form: which one fits the abuse?

The deciding question is what the account took. If it took your identity, meaning your name, face or business presented as its own, an Instagram impersonation report is the route. If it took your work, meaning a photo, video or caption you created, the Instagram copyright report form fits. A registered brand name or logo points to the trademark form, and a request for money points to the scam report.

Identity or work, two doors: the identity run seats the Instagram impersonation report gate; the work run stops short.
Identity goes to the impersonation form with an ID photo; work goes to Meta’s IP form, which tells the account who filed.

Most fake profiles take both identity and work, so the order matters. An impersonation report asks Instagram to remove the whole account, while a copyright notice removes named posts and leaves the profile standing. A catfish that uses your photos under a different name can still count as impersonation, but reviewers then see a name that is not yours, and those reports often close; the copyright route does not depend on the name at all.

Capture before you report. Impersonators rename, go private or delete posts once a report lands. Save the handle, the display name, the profile link, the bio link and every message with its date before filing anything, because a report that no longer matches the live profile is hard for a reviewer to confirm.

How to report impersonation on Instagram, step by step

How to report impersonation on Instagram depends on whether you can log in. With an account, open the impostor’s profile, tap the three-dot menu, choose Report, then Report Account, then “It’s pretending to be someone else”, and pick who is being impersonated. Without an account, or when filing for someone you represent, use the web form, which asks for a photo of you holding your ID.

  1. Record the account

Write down the username, the full name shown next to the profile picture and the profile link. The web form asks for exactly those three items, and a renamed account is easy to lose.

  2. Report from the profile menu

Choose Report, Report Account, “It’s pretending to be someone else”, then say whether it is pretending to be you, someone you follow, a celebrity or public figure, or a business or organisation. The full set of menus is in the guide to every in-app report.

  3. File the web form as well

The web version of an Instagram impersonation report, Instagram’s impersonation form, starts with three situations: someone pretending to be me or a friend, someone pretending to be a person I represent, or “I can’t log into my old account”. It then asks for your name, email and the reported username.

  4. Attach the ID photo

The form wants a photo of you holding your ID, or of the person you represent holding theirs. A blurred or cropped document is the most common reason an otherwise clear report fails.

  5. Follow the decision in Support requests

Decisions on in-app reports appear under Support requests in Instagram’s settings. Our explainer on what a report sets in motion covers the review itself.

Instagram’s impersonation form asks for one impersonating account per report, and says the ID attached to it “will be deleted within 30 days” and “will not be visible to anyone on Instagram.”Instagram Help Center, “Report an Impersonation Account on Instagram or Threads” form, retrieved 30 September 2026.

The same filing answers every version of the question, from how to report someone impersonating me on Instagram to how to report someone impersonating you on Instagram on a friend’s behalf. When an Instagram account is impersonating me, the form’s second question splits the path: “Yes, I am the person being impersonated” or “No, this account is impersonating my friend”. A friend can flag the profile, but Instagram says it can act only on reports from the person impersonated or an authorised representative.

Knowing how to report an Instagram account that is impersonating me matters most when there are several. The form reads “Please only report one impersonating account at a time”, so five clones mean five filings, each with the ID attached. Searches phrased as account impersonating me instagram, impersonating account instagram or impersonating instagram account all end at this same form.

Where impersonation reports stop. The rule protects identity, not reputation. An account that labels itself as a fan, parody or commentary page is judged on whether people would be misled, and a clearly labelled one usually stays up even when it is unkind.

The Instagram copyright report form is the better route when the harm is your content rather than your name: a fake shop reusing your product photos, a catfish built from your selfies under another name, or a page reposting your videos. The link Instagram’s Help Center gives for it now opens Meta’s shared Intellectual Property Reporting Form, where Copyright sits beside Trademark and Counterfeit.

Posts removed, profile stays: the Instagram copyright report form run ends at the gate as the profile run passes under.
A notice names posts, not the account; the profile goes only when repeat notices reach the repeat-infringer policy.

Whichever name you search, instagram copyright infringement form or instagram dmca form, the Instagram copyright report form link lands on the same Meta Intellectual Property Reporting Form. Its first question is “What right is being violated or infringed?”, and Copyright is described as “Original works of authorship such as films, music or books”. The notice it builds carries the parts that a DMCA takedown notice needs, including a statement made under penalty of perjury.

An Instagram copyright or trademark notice passes the reported account the report number, the rights owner’s name, the email address the reporter supplied, the report details and instructions for an appeal.Instagram Help Center, “What happens when you submit a copyright report” and the trademark equivalent, retrieved 22 September 2026.

That disclosure is the trade-off. Against a stranger reselling your photos it rarely matters, but against someone who is harassing you it hands over a working email address. Use a business or agent address in the Instagram copyright report form, or file the impersonation report first and keep the copyright notice for posts that survive.

In December 2023 Instagram received 97,430 copyright reports and 19,856 trademark reports. Meta’s removal rate, content removed against content reported, was 93.44% for copyright and 66.17% for trademark.Meta Transparency Center, Intellectual Property report, Instagram, December 2023.

A copyright notice has limits of its own. It removes the posts named in it, not the account, and a profile is lost only when repeat notices trigger Instagram’s repeat-infringer policy. It also has a lookalike: profiles impersonating Instagram itself, with names built around “Meta” or “Copyright”, send direct messages about a supposed violation to harvest logins. The guide to fake copyright-violation messages shows how to tell those from a real notice.

The Instagram trademark report form and brand abuse

The Instagram trademark report form is for a registered mark: a brand name, slogan, symbol or logo used by an account that is not yours, in a username, bio or product post. The form opens by pointing registered owners to Meta’s Brand Rights Protection tool, and offers a separate branch for counterfeit goods. An unregistered business name goes through an Instagram impersonation report instead, under “A business or organization”.

When we opened the trademark form on 30 September 2026, its first screen described Brand Rights Protection as a tool to find and report trademark violations, counterfeit products and copyright infringements across Meta’s platforms in one place. The form itself warns that it handles trademark claims only and that abuse of it can end the reporter’s own account. Walkthroughs of the form, Red Points’ among them, report that it asks for registration details, so a pending application is a weak basis for a claim.

Across Facebook and Instagram in the second half of 2022, Meta removed 593,179 pieces of content on 1,047,326 trademark reports, fewer removals than reports. Counterfeit reports ran the other way: 180,029 reports led to 1,712,384 removals.Meta, “Transparency Report, Second Half 2022,” May 2023.

Brand abuse seldom stays on one platform. A lookalike shop on Instagram usually comes with a lookalike Facebook Page running the same ads, and a smear campaign against a business often adds fake Google reviews from the same week. Report each piece under the rule it breaks, and keep one log with every case number, because the trademark team and the impersonation team do not see each other’s files.

How to report a catfish on Instagram when the photos are not yours

How to report a catfish on Instagram depends on who you are in the story. The person whose photos were taken holds the strongest report, an Instagram impersonation report backed by ID. The person being catfished can report the profile in the app as pretending to be someone else, or as a scam if money came up, but cannot prove whose face it is. Removal is likeliest when both report.

Standing sits with the face: the photo owner’s run seats the gate, while the catfished person’s dotted run stops short.
The catfished person can flag the profile, but only the person in the photos can prove it with an ID photo.

For anyone asking how to report catfish on Instagram from the receiving end, the route is the Instagram report fake profile option: Report, Report Account, “It’s pretending to be someone else”. A reverse image search of the profile photos often finds the real owner, and telling that person gives them what they need to file with their own ID. There is no separate Instagram fake account report form; the web form for fakes is the impersonation form, and it asks for the impersonated person’s ID.

In a case BleepingComputer documented, a fake profile reposting a Brazilian creator’s photos days after he published them was reported and appealed, and Instagram still replied that it “did not remove the content that you reported.”Ax Sharma, BleepingComputer, “Meta won’t remove fake Instagram profiles that are clearly catfishing,” 20 January 2024.

That case shows the limit of an Instagram catfish report filed by strangers: reviewers compare a profile against the rules, not against a photo owner they cannot see. The photo owner can close the gap two ways, with an impersonation report and ID or with the Instagram copyright report form on the reused photos. Anyone who wants to report catfish Instagram-side and also warn the target should do both in that order, then block.

The FTC received more than 1 million reports about imposter scams in 2025, and reported losses rose by nearly 20% to $3.5 billion.Federal Trade Commission, consumer alert “New trends in reports of imposter scams,” 7 May 2026.

How do I report a scam on Instagram?

How do I report a scam on Instagram? Open the profile, post, ad or chat, tap the three dots, choose Report and pick the scam or fraud reason. For a whole account, report from the profile. If money or login details changed hands, the Instagram scam report is only the first filing: call your bank the same day, then report to the FTC and, for internet fraud, to the FBI’s IC3.

One report, then the bank: the in-app run ends seated at the platform gate, as a second run turns down out of the band.
Instagram’s review stops at the account; money that has left an account is traced through the bank, the FTC or IC3.

How to report scammers on Instagram app menus

  • Profile. How to report a scam on Instagram account pages: three dots on the profile, Report, Report Account, then the scam or fraud reason.
  • Post or Reel. Three dots above the post, Report, and the same reason, so the evidence is the post itself.
  • Direct message. Press and hold the message, or report the chat from its details screen, so the conversation travels with the report.
  • Ad. Three dots on the ad, then Report ad and the reason that fits; the page that paid for it can be reported separately.

Instagram reviews up to the 30 most recent messages in a reported conversation, and deleted, unsent or edited messages can be included when the whole chat or a surrounding message is reported.Instagram Help Center, “Report a message or chat on Instagram,” retrieved 25 September 2026.

Knowing how to report a scammer on Instagram covers only the platform side. Scammers who move the conversation to another app leave a second account to flag, and reporting the Telegram contact follows different menus. Losses go to ReportFraud.ftc.gov and ic3.gov, whose case numbers are what a bank asks for.

Threads that surface for how to report scammers on instagram reddit repeat three tips: get friends to mass-report, message the scammer’s other accounts, and pay someone who promises to recover the money. The first adds nothing, because report counts decide nothing on their own. The third is how a second fraud starts; the FTC lists refund and recovery offers as a scam in their own right. So how to report scammers on Instagram well comes down to one accurate report per item, with the evidence attached.

In 2025, 28% of people who reported losing money to a scam told the FTC it started on social media, with reported losses of $2.1 billion.Federal Trade Commission, Consumer Protection Data Spotlight, April 2026.

Where did the Instagram harassment report form go?

The Instagram harassment report form that most guides still link, help.instagram.com/contact/188391886430254, returned a Not Found page when we checked it on 30 September 2026. Harassment and bullying now go through in-app reports on each post, comment, message or profile, and Instagram’s help page on reporting harassment points there. The one web form that still fits harassment is the Instagram impersonation report form, when the harasser poses as you.

Anyone searching for an instagram report harassment form or an instagram bullying report form will therefore find stale links near the top of the results. The working route is narrower and more precise: report the specific comment, message or post, because a decision on one item is what Instagram’s review produces. The walkthrough on reporting a single comment covers the reasons list and what the commenter sees.

In the second quarter of 2026, users reported 27.4% of the bullying and harassment content Instagram acted on before Meta’s own systems found it. In the same quarter of 2024 the share was 3.1%.Meta Transparency Center, Community Standards Enforcement Report, Instagram: bullying and harassment, Q2 2024 and Q2 2026.

Meta’s bullying policy protects private individuals more than public figures, so a business owner with a public profile gets less cover from harassment rules than from impersonation rules. Where a post threatens violence or publishes a home address, report it in the app and to local police as well; an Instagram decision is not a safety measure. The guide to reporting threats and abuse covers the routes past the platform.

After the fake is gone: cleaning up what it left

Removal on Instagram does not remove the copies. A fake profile’s name can keep showing in search results, its photos may sit on clone accounts, and the same operator often runs lookalikes on other platforms. Reputation repair after an Instagram impersonation report is a short second round: search, capture, report each copy under that platform’s own rules, and ask Google to refresh the stale result.

Gone here, not elsewhere: the removed profile’s run ends seated at the gate, as two copy runs pass it to the edge.
Google keeps a stale title until the page changes and a refresh is requested; clones on other apps each need their own report.
  1. Search the name and the handle

Search your name with the fake handle, then run the profile photos through a reverse image search. Do this weekly for the first month, because clones tend to appear after a removal.

  2. Report the copies elsewhere

Each platform judges its own copy: the TikTok copy, a Snapchat lookalike, posts on X or a Discord server built around the fake. Re-uploaded clips take a separate video removal request.

  3. Refresh the stale search result

Once the profile is gone, Google’s Remove Outdated Content tool accepts the dead URL so the old title and snippet stop showing. The tool works only after the page itself has changed or disappeared.

  4. Tell your audience once

One post from the real account naming the fake handle stops followers answering it. Keep it factual, with no screenshots of the fake’s content, which would spread it further.

The most common follow-up complaint, an account impersonating me on Instagram that returns under a new handle, has an answer in Meta’s rules: its page on disabling accounts, updated 17 July 2025, lists accounts created to get around an earlier removal among those it disables. Say so in the new report and name the removed handle. Where results stay up because nothing on the page breaks a rule, content removal casework and search suppression are the remaining levers.

When an Instagram impersonation report is refused

A refused Instagram impersonation report usually means the reviewer could not match the account to the ID, not that impersonation is allowed. Reply through Support requests with a clearer ID photo and links to your real profile, file the web form if you used the app, and send the copied photos through the Instagram copyright report form. Eligible decisions can go to the Oversight Board within 15 days, and EU users have a separate complaint route.

Reporters in the EU who complained that Instagram had not acted on their notice won a reversal in 1,542 of 5,179 cases in the first half of 2026, roughly 30%. Those complaints took a median of 91.51 hours to decide.Meta, Instagram DSA transparency report, January–June 2026, published 28 August 2026.

Refusals that arrive within minutes point to an automated decision, and the fix is a better filing rather than a louder one; the breakdown of what happens after a report shows each outcome and its appeal window. Some impersonation is also a crime, California Penal Code 528.5 among others, but that route runs through police or a lawyer, and this guide is not legal advice. When several routes have failed, documented removal casework starts from the reports already filed rather than repeating them.

Frequently asked questions

Is an Instagram impersonation report anonymous?

Yes. Instagram does not tell the reported account who filed an impersonation report. The ID you attach confirms your identity, is not visible to anyone on Instagram and is deleted within 30 days. Copyright and trademark reports work differently: the reported account receives the rights owner’s name and the email address the reporter supplied.

Can I report an account that is impersonating my friend?

You can flag it in the app, and the web form has an option for an account impersonating a friend. Instagram says it can act only on reports from the person being impersonated or an authorised representative, so removal is most likely when your friend files with their own ID.

Is there a separate Instagram fake account report form?

No. A fake profile that poses as a real person goes through an Instagram impersonation report, on the web form or the in-app “It’s pretending to be someone else” option. A fake account that impersonates nobody, such as a spam or scam profile, is reported in the app under the matching reason instead.

How long does an Instagram impersonation report take?

Instagram publishes no review time for impersonation reports. Some come back within minutes, which points to an automated decision; others wait for a person to compare the ID with the profile. Decisions on in-app reports appear under Support requests, and filing the same report again does not move it forward.

Should I use the Instagram copyright report form against a catfish?

Use it when the catfish posts photos or videos you took. The notice removes those posts and can count toward a repeat-infringer ban, but it gives the account holder your name and email. To stay unknown to the operator, file the impersonation report first and keep the copyright route for posts that survive.

Fake profile still up after two reports?

Send the handle, what you filed and what Instagram replied. The review sets out which route fits each part of the account, and what can be cleaned up once it is gone.
