Facebook impersonation report: the fake, the scams it ran, and the repair

Short answer. A Facebook impersonation report starts on the fake profile: open the Options menu below the cover photo, choose Report profile, pick the option for pretending to be someone, then choose Me if the copy is of you. Without an account, Meta's Report an Impostor Account form takes the same report with an ID upload. A fake that also scams buyers, runs ads or trades on your brand needs the Marketplace, ad or intellectual-property report that matches that harm.

An impostor on Facebook rarely stops at copying a name. The copy borrows your photos to sell phones on Marketplace that never ship, messages your friends asking for emergency money, or runs ads carrying your logo that point to a checkout page you have never seen. Each of those acts lands in a different Meta review queue, and one Facebook impersonation report reaches only one of them.

This guide is written for the person or business being copied. It covers the impersonation routes for profiles and Pages, what a scam report on Marketplace can and cannot lead to, scam ads and scam groups, and the repair work that follows once the fake is gone: buyers who were cheated in your name, the reviews they left, and search results that still show the copy. Help-centre steps were read on facebook.com on 6 October 2026. Copies that survive a first Facebook impersonation report, or keep returning, are handled as casework under our content removal service.

68% of all purchase fraud reports from Lloyds Bank customers between March 2025 and March 2026 started on Meta's platforms, with Facebook Marketplace prominent among them, and losses linked to those platforms rose from £27 million in 2023 to about £66 million.Lloyds Bank fraud data, as reported on 8 June 2026.

Which Facebook impersonation report fits what the fake is doing?

The right Facebook impersonation report depends on the harm, not on the copying alone. A profile or Page posing as you goes through the impersonation report or the impostor form. A copy using your registered brand name or logo goes through Meta's intellectual-property form. Marketplace scams, scam ads and scam groups each have their own report button, and a fake that also threatens or defames you needs those reports as well.

Banner reading One fake, many harms, one report for each: a Facebook impersonation report reaches only the impostor queue
Meta's IP form starts with a choice of Copyright, Trademark or Counterfeit, so a copy that steals photos and a logo needs two filings of the same form.

Facebook impersonation removal works fastest when the reviewer receives the harm its queue is built to judge. An impersonation reviewer asks one question: is this account pretending to be a real person or business? That reviewer is not checking whether a listing was a scam or whether a logo is protected, so a copy that does all three can survive a report that answered only one of them. The table lists the eight shapes a copy usually takes and the route for each.

What the copy doesRouteWho can fileProof that decides itRealistic outcome

The last column is the one most guides skip. An impersonation report removes the copy; it does not remove the ads, listings or posts the copy has already pushed into other people's feeds, and it refunds nobody. A fake that has been active for weeks therefore usually needs three or four reports filed in parallel, each kept with its own date and screenshot. The full list of seven Meta report routes, with the cases each one fits, is set out in our guide to fake accounts and Facebook DMCA routes.

The Facebook copyright report form no longer lives on facebook.com as a page of its own. When we followed the old help-centre link it redirected to Meta's unified intellectual-property form on help.meta.com, where the first choice is Copyright, Trademark or Counterfeit. Copyright covers your photos and videos; trademark covers your brand name and logo. Rights owners on other apps face the same split, as the guide to TikTok copyright reports shows for TikTok's two forms.

People who search for a Facebook harassment report form, or a Facebook harassment reporting form, are usually looking for a webform that skips the in-app button. For adults with an account there is no general harassment webform: harassment is reported on the post, comment, message or profile itself, and Meta's policy expects private adults to report some tiers of abuse themselves, the rule explained in Facebook's harassment tiers. The webforms Meta does run cover narrower ground: impostor accounts, defamation, intellectual property and privacy complaints about images of you.

How to report impersonation on Facebook, step by step

How to report impersonation on Facebook from an account: open the fake profile, click the Options menu (the three dots) below the cover photo, choose Report profile, pick the option for pretending to be someone, and then say who is being copied: you, a friend or a public figure. A Page uses the same path through Report Page. Without an account, Meta's impostor form takes the report.

Banner reading Tapped, then proven: an in-app report breaks short of the gate while the ID-backed form runs through it.
The impostor form also asks for any email address or phone number shown on the fake profile, which ties the copy to the messages it sent.

Meta's help page on impersonation puts the report on the profile itself, and a Facebook impersonation report filed there is judged as an account-level problem. Reporting one post from the copy gets that post judged on its own terms, and a reposted holiday photo of yours breaks no rule on its own. The steps below are how to report an impersonation account on Facebook so that the reviewer sees the account.

  1. Save the evidence first

Screenshot the profile with its name, photo and URL visible, plus any messages it sent. If the copy is removed, the screenshot and the URL are the only record left for a police report or a second filing.

  2. Report the profile, not a post

Options below the cover photo, then Report profile. This is how to report a Facebook account for impersonation in a way that puts the whole account in front of a reviewer.

  3. Choose who is being copied

Pick Me only if you are the person copied. A friend reporting on your behalf picks the friend option, and for a public figure the reviewer compares the copy against the real account.

  4. File the impostor form if the report fails

Meta's Report an Impostor Account form asks for your name and email, the impostor's name, any email or phone number shown on the fake profile, the profile URL and an ID upload. The ID is the one thing a copy cannot match.

  5. Warn your contacts from the real account

A short post naming the fake URL stops the copy from working while the review runs, and friends who see it can file in-app reports of their own.

How to report someone impersonating me on Facebook when they have blocked you

Impostors often block the person they copy, so the fake profile does not appear for you at all. Meta's answer for content you cannot see is to ask a friend with an account to report it, and Meta says it cannot act on a report until it can find the content, so the friend should report from the profile itself. This is also how to report someone impersonating me on Facebook from a logged-out or new account: the friend files, you supply the URL and screenshots.

The form is the other way round the block. How do I report to Facebook someone is impersonating me if I never had an account? The Report an Impostor Account form works without a login, and its first question offers three roles: the person being impersonated, an authorised representative such as a parent or legal guardian, or a friend of the person. How to report if someone is impersonating you on Facebook and you are under 18 follows the same form, filed by a parent or guardian.

How to report a Facebook Page for impersonation

How to report a Facebook Page for impersonation follows the profile route with one catch. Open the Page, choose Options below the cover photo, then Report Page, and pick the option that files a report. Meta's help page on reporting Pages notes that some of the reasons offered only record feedback and do not send anything for review, so a choice that ends without a submission step has not reported the Page.

Anonymity matters to people who know who the impostor is. Meta's help centre says that when Facebook contacts a reported account, the reporter's information is not included, and a Facebook impersonation report is no exception. Context still gives people away: when a copy disappears a day after an ex-partner learns you found it, the timing tells them who reported it. How to report an impersonator on Facebook without that risk comes down to who files: a friend's in-app report carries no link to you at all.

How to report Facebook impersonation of a person who has died is a separate request: memorialisation or removal, filed by family through Meta's own form, and covered in our guide to deleting a deceased person's Facebook account. If the impostor took over your real account rather than copying it, the case is account recovery, not impersonation.

Facebook business page impersonation removal and brand abuse

Facebook business page impersonation removal goes faster on intellectual-property grounds than on impersonation grounds. A copy of your business Page that uses your registered trademark can be reported through Meta's IP form under Trademark, filed by the rights owner or an agent with the registration details. Without a registration, the Page report plus evidence of customer confusion is the remaining route, and it is a weaker one.

The reason is what each reviewer can verify. A Facebook impersonation report on a business Page asks a judgement question, and a trademark report asks a factual one. An impersonation reviewer looking at two Pages called "Harbour Plumbing" has to decide which one is real from photos and dates, and a business with a common name often cannot prove the copy is pretending to be it. A trademark report hands the reviewer a registration number, a jurisdiction and a list of goods or services, which is a legal fact rather than a judgement call. Counterfeit goods sold under your mark go under the Counterfeit option of the same form.

Build the brand file once and reuse it for every copy:

  • Your real Page URL and the fake Page URL, captured side by side.
  • The registration number, the office that issued it and the classes it covers.
  • Screenshots of your logo, product photos or wording copied onto the fake.
  • Messages from customers who paid the fake, which prove confusion better than any description.

Public figures get one protection a small business does not. Since late 2024 Meta has compared faces in suspected celeb-bait ads against the profile pictures of enrolled public figures and removed matches that the real account did not approve. The system has since been expanded beyond its first tests.

By September 2025 Meta's facial-recognition checks covered nearly 500,000 public figures and were running in the UK, the EU and South Korea; Meta said user reports of celeb-bait scam ads fell 22% after the checks were introduced.Social Media Today, reporting Meta's figures, 30 September 2025.

The limit is plain: the system protects enrolled public figures, and a local business owner whose face appears in a fake ad gets nothing from it. The same copy usually turns up on Instagram too, where Instagram's fake-account rules draw the impersonation line in almost the same place.

Can a report ban Facebook Marketplace scammer accounts?

No report can ban Facebook Marketplace scammer accounts by itself; Meta makes that decision. A report puts the listing, the seller or the buyer in front of a reviewer under the Scam reason. Meta can then remove the listing, cut the person's Marketplace access under its Commerce Policies, or disable the whole account. Filing the same report twice adds nothing a reviewer can use; a report from each person scammed adds new evidence.

Banner reading Reported by you, ruled by Meta: a buyer's run turns down into Meta's line, the only one that crosses the gate.
Meta's three Marketplace report paths start on different screens, Buying, Seller dashboard and the listing itself, and all end at the same Scam option.

Meta's help page on Marketplace scams gives three separate paths, one for each object, and the right one depends on who did what. The table follows the computer steps as Meta lists them; the app menus carry the same labels.

Who scammed youWhere to startPath to the report
A sellerMarketplace, BuyingThe listing, the seller's name, Options, Report, Scam
A buyerMarketplace, Selling, Seller dashboardThe listing the buyer purchased, your conversation, More options, Report, Scam
A listing still liveThe listing itselfOptions below the title, Report listing, Scam
Someone selling under your nameThe seller's profileReport the listing as Scam, then the profile as pretending to be you

That table is the short form of how to report a scammer on Facebook Marketplace. For a Facebook Marketplace report scam seller case, the report runs from the seller's profile reached through the listing. A Facebook Marketplace report scam buyer case runs from the conversation, because a buyer has no listing of their own. In both, Meta's first instruction is to stop communicating with the other person and then report.

How to report a Facebook Marketplace scammer who has already blocked you: the listing and the conversation usually stay visible in your Buying or Selling history, and the report can start there. When nothing is visible, Meta's advice is the same as for impersonation: ask a friend to report the profile, with the link you saved.

A Facebook Marketplace scam report is strongest when it is specific. Include the listing link, the date you paid, the payment method, and the moment the person moved the chat off Facebook. Scammers routinely shift buyers to Telegram or WhatsApp before the payment step, and that half of the chain is reported on the other app; the routes for scam reports on Telegram and for reporting the Telegram account cover it.

Meta took down 10.9 million Facebook and Instagram accounts associated with criminal scam centres in 2025.Meta Integrity Reports, first half of 2026.

A Facebook Marketplace scammer takedown rarely ends with one account. Facebook's terms forbid a person whose account was disabled from creating another without Meta's permission, and scam operations ignore that and return under new names. Meta decides bans on strikes and severity rather than on the number of people who reported, the same logic behind TikTok's feature-level strikes and the factors in what actually gets a TikTok account banned. A Facebook Marketplace report scammer filing is still worth making each time: it is the record a reviewer sees when the same photos come back. Reports cannot ban Facebook Marketplace scammer accounts permanently; they keep each new account short-lived.

The appeal runs the other way too. A seller whose Marketplace access was removed can ask for a review from Account Quality in Facebook's settings. That protects honest sellers who were reported by a rival, and it also means a removed scammer can try the same appeal. Money lost to a Facebook Marketplace report scam case comes back, if at all, through your bank or card issuer, not through Facebook; in the US, file at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and ic3.gov as well as with local police.

How do I report a scam ad on Facebook?

To report a scam ad on Facebook, click the three dots on the ad, choose Report ad, and pick the scam or misleading option. If the ad has scrolled away, search the advertiser's name in Meta's Ad Library, open the ad and report it from there. Then report the advertiser's Page as well, because the ad and the Page are reviewed separately and removing one leaves the other.

Banner reading The ad goes, the Page stays: the ad's run stops dead at the gate while the Page's run carries on through it.
Meta's Ad Library lists every ad a Page is running at that moment, which is the quickest way to find the copy's other campaigns.

An ad that uses your brand or your face is an impersonation problem wearing an ad. How to report scam ad on Facebook when the ad uses your name: report the ad for scam, report the Page running it for pretending to be you, and file the IP form under Trademark if your registered name or logo appears. The Ad Library also shows every other ad the same Page is running, which is often a list of the copy's other victims.

Meta removed 159 million scam ads in 2025, 92% of them before anyone reported them.Meta Integrity Reports, first half of 2026.

The 8% that reach users are the ones that need a person's report, and the advertiser behind them is rarely a one-off. How to report Facebook ads scam campaigns that keep coming back is less about the ad and more about the Page and the landing domain: report the Page, and send the domain to its registrar's abuse contact if it is selling goods that do not exist.

Searches for how to report Facebook ads scam reddit usually follow a report that came back with no action. Forum threads cannot move a review queue. What changes the outcome is new evidence: the Page report alongside the ad report, the IP form when your brand is involved, and a payment record if money was lost.

Reported losses to scams that began on social media reached $2.1 billion in 2025, Facebook was the platform most often named, and more than 40% of those scams started with an ad.Federal Trade Commission data spotlight, 27 April 2026.

How to report Facebook ads scam to police depends on where you live, but the evidence pack is the same everywhere: the Ad Library link, screenshots of the ad and the checkout page, the website address, payment receipts and any messages. In the US, file at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov, then with local police if money was taken. Keep the reference number; banks commonly ask for it when they review a fraud claim.

How to get a Facebook group banned for scam

How to get a Facebook group banned for scam activity: report the group to Facebook from Options below its cover photo, choose Report group and the scam reason, and report the individual scam posts too. Meta removes groups when admins or moderators post or approve violating content, or when the group's name, description or cover breaks the rules. Reporting to the group's admins sends nothing to Facebook.

That last point catches many members. Meta's help page on the Report to group admins button says the report goes only to the admins, the admins can see who sent it, and a group is not taken down because of reports made to its admins. In a scam group the admins are usually the scammers, so that button warns them and nothing else.

Groups whose sole admin has left are a separate case. Meta pauses a group automatically if no new admin accepts within seven days of the last admin leaving, deactivating or deleting their account. The same rules for Pages and groups, and how each report reaches Facebook, are covered in our guide to reporting a Facebook Page or group.

After the fake is gone: repairing what it did in your name

A successful Facebook impersonation report ends the copy but not what it did. People it scammed may still blame you, reviews they left stay up, and search engines can keep showing the dead profile for weeks. The repair has four parts: a public notice from your real account, direct replies to the people who were cheated, a request to drop outdated search results, and a watch for the copy's return.

Banner reading Removed, still indexed: the profile's run ends at the gate while a faint search copy runs on past it.
Google's Refresh Outdated Content tool needs only the dead URL; the person filing does not have to own the page that was removed.
  1. Post a notice on the real account

Name the fake URL, say plainly that the account was not yours, and state how people can confirm they are dealing with you. Pin the post for a month. Buyers who search your name after losing money find that notice first.

  2. Answer the people who were cheated

Point them to their bank and to the reporting routes above, and show them your police reference or the Support Inbox record of your Facebook impersonation report. Offering money can read as admitting the scam was yours, so take legal advice before making any payment. This is not legal advice.

  3. Drop the outdated search result

Once Facebook removes the copy, its URL returns an error page. Google's Refresh Outdated Content tool lets anyone ask Google to recrawl a URL that no longer exists, which usually clears the snippet faster than waiting.

  4. Deal with the reviews it caused

Angry buyers often review the real business on Google or Trustpilot. Reviews that describe a scam you did not run are disputable as off-topic or false, the work described in removing reviews that blame you for a fake.

  5. Watch for the copy to return

Search your name and brand on Facebook weekly for a month. Copies come back with one letter changed, and on other apps: TikTok's ID-backed impersonation form and a DMCA notice on X handle the same photos elsewhere.

Two kinds of damage need more than a notice. A fake that posted false claims while posing as you has created content that outlives the account in screenshots and shares, and the options for it, from platform forms to court orders, are set out in our defamation removal guide. A fake that posted intimate images or personal data falls under faster legal routes, described in removing leaked images and data.

When a Facebook impersonation report is refused

A refused Facebook impersonation report usually has one of three causes: the report went to the wrong queue, the wrong person filed it, or the copy differs enough, through a parody label or a changed spelling, that the reviewer saw no pretence. Re-filing the same in-app report changes nothing. The impostor form with ID, an IP report or a lawyer's letter changes the evidence the reviewer holds.

A Facebook impersonation removal service can organise that evidence, file the IP and defamation routes in the rights owner's name, send legal notices where the copy causes real harm, and watch for returns. It cannot buy a faster Meta queue or promise a result that Meta controls, which is the test for what a removal service can actually do before you pay one. Anyone who promises to ban Facebook Marketplace scammer accounts or guarantees a Facebook ban is selling a decision that belongs to Meta.

More than one million imposter complaints reached the FTC, and in September 2026 the agency asked for public comment on whether its Government and Business Impersonation Rule should address the role platforms' ad systems play in impersonation scams.Federal Trade Commission press release, 24 September 2026.

That FTC notice concerns businesses and government agencies being impersonated, and it creates no removal right for an individual whose profile was copied. For a person, the routes above and, where the copy causes real loss, a lawyer's letter or a court order remain the tools available.

Frequently asked questions

How do I report someone impersonating me on Facebook without an account?

Use Meta's Report an Impostor Account form, which works without a login. Choose that you are the person being impersonated, give your name and email, the impostor's name and any email or phone number shown on the fake profile, paste the profile URL and upload an ID. A friend with an account can also report the profile in the app.

Will the impostor know I reported them?

Not from an impersonation report. Meta's help centre says the reporter's information is not included when Facebook contacts a reported account. Copyright reports differ: Meta says it regularly gives the rights owner's name, email address and report details to the person who posted the content. Timing can also give you away when the impostor knows you.

How long does a Facebook impersonation report take?

Meta publishes no review time for a Facebook impersonation report. Decisions on in-app reports appear in your Support Inbox, and the impostor form asks for an email address because that is where Meta follows up. A report that comes back with no action does not reopen by itself, so the next step is the form with ID or an IP report.

Can Facebook ban a Marketplace scammer permanently?

Meta can disable the account and remove its Marketplace access, and Facebook's terms forbid a disabled user from opening another account without permission. Scam operations return under new names anyway. Report each new account with the same evidence, because the earlier reports and photos are what let a reviewer connect the new account to the old one.

What if a fake Page uses my business name but I have no trademark?

Report the Page as impersonation from Options below its cover photo and attach your real Page URL, proof that the business is yours and messages from customers the fake confused. If it copied your photos, the copyright option of Meta's IP form covers those without a trademark. Registration is what makes later copies quick to remove.

Does reporting a scam group to its admins get it removed?

No. Meta's help centre says a report to group admins goes only to the admins, who can see who sent it, and that a group is not taken down because of reports made to its admins. Report the group to Facebook through Report group instead, and report the individual scam posts as well.

Fake still up, or still scamming in your name?

Send the copy's profile or Page links, your real account, and Meta's replies so far. The review sets out which route is still open, what proof it needs, and what Meta can and cannot be made to remove.
