Instagram fake account report: getting the copy taken down

Short answer. An Instagram fake account report starts on the profile: tap the three dots, then Report, then Something about this account, then They’re pretending to be someone else, and say who is being copied. That is how to get a fake Instagram account removed when it copies you, someone you follow, a public figure or a business. A fake persona that copies nobody goes in as spam or a scam instead, because Instagram’s impersonation rule does not cover it.

Instagram’s help centre draws a line that most removal guides skip. An account can be reported for impersonating someone or something, “but not for misrepresenting itself”. A fake account built from stock photos and an invented name impersonates nobody, so an impersonation review has no real account to compare it with, and the report comes back with no action. The person who filed it then concludes that Instagram ignores fake accounts.

This guide sorts fake accounts by what they copy, gives the report path and the evidence for each, and sets out the order of escalation when a first Instagram fake account report is refused. The Instagram help pages cited here were read in English on 3 October 2026. Form-by-form detail for impersonation, copyright and trademark claims sits in our guide to Instagram’s report forms; this page is about getting the account itself removed, and about the casework under our content removal service when one report is not enough.

Meta publishes a fake-account removal count only for Facebook, which took action on 1.1 billion fake accounts in the fourth quarter of 2025. Its enforcement reports carry no equivalent line for Instagram, so nobody outside Meta knows how many fake Instagram accounts are removed.Meta Community Standards Enforcement Report, Q4 2025, as compiled by Statista.

Which Instagram fake account report fits the account you found?

The right Instagram fake account report depends on what the account copies. A clone of a real person or business goes through impersonation. A fake persona, bot or spam account goes through the spam report. A fake giveaway or fake support account goes through scam or fraud. Stolen photos or videos that you created go through copyright. Each route applies a different rule, so the label you pick shapes the outcome before a reviewer reads anything.

Banner reading One menu, separate rulebooks: an instagram fake account report run seats its gate; a side branch stops short.
The label decides which rule the reviewer applies; an account that copies nobody never reaches the impersonation check.

A search for insta fake account report usually starts with a clone, but the same menu handles all six rows; only the answer chosen inside it changes. To remove fake accounts on Instagram that copy nobody, the spam report is the correct label, and the evidence that matters is behaviour: identical comments, follow-and-unfollow bursts, or DMs pushing a link.

For an instagram report fake business account case, choose a business or organization and name the real business account so the reviewer can compare the two. Owners of a registered trademark also have the trademark form. Fake business profiles rarely travel alone: the same operators post invented complaints and reviews, which are handled separately through fake Google review removal and, on other sites, the routes a review removal service can use.

How to report a fake Instagram account in the app

To report fake Instagram account profiles in the app, open the profile, tap the three dots at the top right, tap Report, then Something about this account, then They’re pretending to be someone else, and choose who is being copied. Instagram keeps the report anonymous unless it is an intellectual property claim. Each fake account needs its own Instagram fake account report; one report never covers a network of copies.

  1. Save the evidence before reporting

Copy the profile URL and screenshot the username, bio, profile photo, posts and any DMs the account sent. Open About this account from the three-dot menu and capture the date joined, the country and the number of former usernames. A fake account often renames itself or goes private once reported.

  2. Open the report menu

From the profile, tap the three dots at the top right and tap Report. On the web the same menu sits beside the username.

  3. Pick the label that matches the copy

Tap Something about this account, then They’re pretending to be someone else, and choose the type of impersonation: you, someone you follow, a public figure or a business. For an account that copies nobody, choose spam or scam instead.

  4. Finish the on-screen steps

Instagram may ask the person being copied to confirm their identity. Upload the ID when asked; skipping that step is a common reason an impersonation report stalls.

  5. Track the decision

The outcome appears under Support requests in Instagram’s Help settings. Note the date of each report; the escalation ladder later on this page counts from it.

Nobody outside Instagram can delete an account. People who search how to delete someone fake account on instagram are asking for a report that leads Instagram to disable it; there is no other lever, and no tool that skips the review. The same answer covers how to take down fake instagram account clones and how to get a fake page taken down on instagram when the page poses as a brand, fan page or meme account using your face. For the other report categories, from hate speech to self-harm, see our guide to reporting an Instagram account.

In a case BleepingComputer documented, an impostor account created in 2022 copied an influencer whose real account dated from 2013, and the impostor had changed its username seven times. Instagram still declined to remove it, and the appeal failed.BleepingComputer, “Meta won’t remove fake Instagram profiles that are clearly catfishing”, 20 January 2024.

How to remove a fake Instagram account pretending to me

How to remove a fake Instagram account pretending to me comes down to who files: report it from the profile as impersonating you, then confirm your identity if Instagram asks. Without an Instagram account, or when the impostor has blocked you, use Instagram’s impersonation form, which asks for a photo of you holding a government ID. The report has to come from you or an authorized representative.

Banner reading Filed by the one copied: the copied person's run seats the gate; the dotted bystander run stops short.
Instagram's no-account form takes one profile per report and asks for a photo of the reporter holding a government ID.

The Instagram Help Center report a fake account pages split the flow by device, but every version ends in the same impersonation review. The Instagram fake account report link for people without an account is the form titled Report an Impersonation Account on Instagram or Threads. It takes one account per report and asks for the ID photo; Instagram says the ID is deleted within 30 days.

Searches for report fake instagram account help often come from parents. Instagram’s help page says an account impersonating someone you are authorized to represent, such as your child, is reported by contacting Meta rather than through the in-app menu. Instagram also offers an impersonation protection benefit to Meta Verified subscribers. That benefit adds monitoring for a verified profile; it does not change the rule a reviewer applies to a clone.

Reports from bystanders carry less weight. An impersonation review compares the fake account with a real one. When a friend reports your clone and you never confirm, the reviewer has no identity to check, and refusals in that situation are common. Ask the person being copied to file the Instagram fake account report, even if friends have already reported.

Why is Instagram not removing the fake account?

Instagram usually declines a fake account report for one of five reasons: the account copies nobody identifiable, someone other than the copied person filed, the label did not match the harm, the evidence did not show copying, or the account carries a fan or parody label. A refusal records the outcome of one review on one route. A second report on the matching route, from the right person, is judged afresh.

Banner reading Refused on one route: one run stops short of the gate; a second turns down and passes through.
A refusal closes one route only; the matching label, filed by the person copied, starts a new review.
Refusal reasonWhat the reviewer sawWhat changes the outcome
Copies nobodyAn account misrepresenting itself, outside the impersonation ruleReport as spam or scam, with the messages it sends
Wrong reporterA third party reporting someone else’s cloneThe copied person files, or a representative contacts Meta
Wrong labelYour photos reposted under a different name, filed as impersonationA copyright report for photos you took
Thin evidenceA similar name and photo, nothing moreAbout this account screenshots, side-by-side posts, original upload dates
Fan or parody labelAn account labelled as not the real personReport only conduct that still deceives, such as DMs asking for money

The phrase instagram not removing fake account describes the commonest outcome on this page, and the table explains most of it. Instagram’s own help page on impersonation says that its systems either decide immediately, based on confidence, or send the account for review against policy, and that a celebrity name can trigger an ID check at sign-up. That proactive monitoring is described for public figures and creators; a clone of a private person depends far more on the report itself.

Meta puts its global enforcement precision at around 92% on Instagram at the end of the first half of 2026, so roughly 8 in every 100 enforcement actions were not correct by its own measure.Meta Transparency Center, Integrity Reports H2 2026, updated 27 August 2026.

Reviews err in both directions, which is why the next step is a better report rather than the same report again. Learning how to get Instagram to take down a fake account after a refusal is mostly a matter of changing the route or the reporter. Report volume alone does not change the rule applied, as our breakdown of how many reports an Instagram ban takes shows.

How to get a fake account taken down on Instagram after a refusal

To get a fake account taken down on Instagram after a refusal, escalate in order: re-report on the matching route with the copied person filing, add a copyright notice for any photos or videos you own, then use the no-account form, police or a lawyer for clones that persist. Each step adds a rule the account must answer to. The timings below are our casework practice, not targets Instagram publishes.

Banner reading Each step adds a rule: a run turns in from above and passes the gate while a dotted run stops short.
Copyright notices remove posts and count against the account; they never settle the impersonation question.
  1. Day 0: evidence pack

Profile URL, screenshots, About this account details, and the DMs or comments the fake sent. Ask contacts who received messages to keep them and report each message as a scam themselves.

  2. Day 1: in-app report by the person copied

One Instagram fake account report per fake account, on the label from the table above, with ID uploaded if Instagram asks for it.

  3. Day 7: second route

If nothing has changed, file the impersonation form with the ID photo, or switch label when the first one did not match the harm.

  4. Day 7 to 10: copyright notices

For every post that reuses photos or videos you created, file through Meta’s intellectual property form. Each successful notice removes the post and counts against the account.

  5. Day 14 onward: outside pressure

Police report where the clone asks for money, threatens or targets a minor; a lawyer’s letter or court order where the account publishes false claims about you.

That sequence is how to get a fake Instagram account removed when a single review has already said no. Most clones fall at step two or three; the later steps exist for the ones that do not.

An instagram dmca fake account takedown removes posts, not the identity behind them. A clone stripped of your photos often loses its point and is abandoned, and repeat infringers are disabled under Meta’s policy. The limit is ownership: a photo someone else took of you belongs to the photographer, and a copyright report is the one Instagram route where your name and contact details can reach the account you report. Our DMCA takedown guide covers counter-notices, which can restore the posts after 10 to 14 business days under 17 U.S.C. §512(g).

Most guides on how to get fake instagram account taken down stop at the first report, and the cases that reach us usually stalled at step three. When the clone is publishing false statements, the claim becomes online defamation and is handled on legal grounds; when it exists to threaten or demean you, the abuse itself is reportable under the routes in our abuse reporting guide. The decision to remove fake instagram account clones stays with Instagram throughout, and nothing on this ladder forces it.

When the same fake account exists on other platforms

Impostors rarely build one profile. The same name and photos tend to appear on Facebook, X, TikTok and Snapchat within days, often linked from the Instagram bio. Each platform runs its own review, so each copy needs its own report: the Facebook fake profile routes, the X account report, the TikTok enforcement process, TikTok Shop and bot-ring reports when the copy sells or spams there, and reporting on Snapchat. Where the person behind the clone also harasses you on Facebook, Meta’s harassment report tiers apply there.

Does an Instagram fake report bot work?

No. An Instagram fake report bot files the same report from many accounts, and Instagram reviews the reported account against one rule no matter how many reports arrive. Meta treats coordinated misuse of reporting as inauthentic behavior in its own right, so the accounts running an instagram report fake account bot are the ones most likely to be restricted. A single well-evidenced report from the person copied does more.

Meta has acted on this before: its December 2021 Adversarial Threat Report describes removing a network in Vietnam that filed hundreds, in some cases thousands, of false reports against activists and government critics, under its Inauthentic Behavior policy against mass reporting. Bot reports also arrive without the one thing an impersonation review needs, an identity to compare against, so they fail even when the target really is fake. Our mass-reporting analysis covers the services that sell this.

Meta found a covert network of 4 Facebook accounts and 31 Instagram accounts with more than 79,000 followers through its own proactive detection, despite the operators using U.S. and Canadian proxy infrastructure.Meta Adversarial Threat Report, summarised in Integrity Reports H2 2026, August 2026.

How to report a fake Instagram giveaway or a phishing email pretending to be Instagram

To report a fake Instagram giveaway, report the post and the organiser’s profile as a scam or fraud, and report any DM that asks for a fee, card details or a login. To report a phishing email pretending to be Instagram, forward it to [email protected], then check whether Instagram really sent it under Recent emails in the app’s security settings, which lists official emails from the last 14 days.

Fake giveaways copy a real brand or creator, comment “you won” under strangers’ posts, then ask winners for a shipping fee or a login. Many push the winner off Instagram to claim the prize, so the chat at the other end needs its own report: see reporting a Telegram account and reporting a Discord server. If money was paid, report the loss to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to the bank or payment app.

Meta removed 65 million scam ads from Facebook and Instagram in the first part of 2026, 94% of them before anyone reported them, and in June 2026 a joint operation with the U.S. Department of Justice’s Scam Center Strike Force removed more than 1.4 million accounts, Pages and Groups and contributed to 63 arrests.Meta Transparency Center, Integrity Reports H2 2026, updated 27 August 2026.

Phishing emails threaten a ban or offer a gift, which Instagram’s help page names as the two tells. The same page lists 13 Meta sender addresses and domains, among them facebookmail.com, fb.com, meta.com and several metamail.com subdomains; check the sender against that list and against Recent emails before clicking anything. If a login was already entered on a fake page, reset the password, log out of unknown devices and, if you are locked out, follow our account recovery process.

How to remove fake or spam followers on Instagram

To remove fake or spam followers on Instagram, open your profile, tap Followers and tap Remove next to each account, or open Flagged for review when Instagram has marked suspected spam followers and use Remove all. Removed followers are not notified. Blocking works too and stops the account following again. Neither step reports the account; the spam report does that.

Banner reading Removed, not reported: the follower run ends before the gate while a faint run carries on past it.
Removed followers are not notified, and the account itself stays live until someone reports it.

Bot followers are a different problem from a clone: they distort reach and engagement figures rather than steal an identity. Instagram flags many of them itself, which is what the Flagged for review list shows. Removing them lowers the follower count, so expect the number to drop.

Instagram began removing inauthentic likes, follows and comments generated by third-party growth apps in November 2018, and warned accounts that kept using those apps.TechCrunch, 19 November 2018.

Apps that promise to remove fake instagram accounts from a follower list in bulk usually need your password, which is the same request a phishing page makes. Instagram’s built-in Remove all on flagged followers does the job without handing over a login.

What can a fake Instagram account removal service do?

A fake Instagram account removal service can assemble evidence, pick the matching route, file copyright and trademark notices as an agent, and keep escalating when Instagram refuses. A service cannot delete an account, buy a removal, or reach a reviewer through a back channel. Instagram makes every removal decision, so a service promising a fixed result or deadline is selling something it does not control.

Instagram fake account removal through the official routes is free, and anyone learning how to remove fake instagram account clones can do every step on this page alone. Paid help earns its fee on volume (dozens of clones of a creator), on copyright notices filed as agent, and on cases that need a lawyer. Knowing how to get a fake Instagram account removed without help also makes it easier to judge what a provider is really offering. Treat these as warning signs: a request for your Instagram password, a guaranteed 24-hour removal, mass reporting offered as the method, or payment only in crypto.

Frequently asked questions

Does Instagram tell the account who reported it?

No. Instagram says reports are anonymous and the reported account does not see who filed them. Intellectual property reports are the exception: a copyright or trademark claim can pass the reporter’s name and contact details to the account holder, so use those routes only for work you own.

How long does an Instagram fake account report take?

Instagram publishes no fixed review time for impersonation or fake account reports. The decision appears under Support requests in the app’s Help settings, usually within days. If nothing has changed after a week, file again on the matching route, with the person being copied as the reporter and ID ready to upload.

Can I report a fake Instagram account without having Instagram?

Yes. Instagram’s form titled Report an Impersonation Account on Instagram or Threads accepts reports from people with no account or who have been blocked. It takes one account per report and asks for a photo of you holding a government ID, which Instagram says it deletes within 30 days.

Will a fake account be removed faster if many people report it?

No. Instagram applies one rule to the reported account however many reports arrive. Genuine reports from people the fake account messaged add evidence about its behaviour, but coordinated or automated reporting breaks Meta’s Inauthentic Behavior policy and puts the reporting accounts at risk instead.

Can I find out who is behind a fake Instagram account?

Not from Instagram directly. Meta releases account data under its law-enforcement guidelines, which means a police request or a court order obtained through a lawyer. If the fake account is demanding money, threatening you or targeting a minor, a police report is the step that can lead to that disclosure.

What should I do if a fake account is messaging my followers for money?

Report each message as a scam from the chat, report the profile as impersonation, and post a story telling followers which account is real. Ask anyone who paid to contact their bank or payment app and to report the loss to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov or their national fraud line.

Fake Instagram account still up after a report?

Send the profile links, the routes already used and Instagram’s replies. The review sets out which route is still open, the evidence it needs and what it cannot do.
