Grindr catfish report and GitHub DMCA takedown form: which desk takes which fake

Short answer. A Grindr catfish report is filed inside the app: open the profile, tap the block icon, choose Report, then pick Impersonation if the profile poses as a real person or Spam if the profile is running a scam. That report can remove a profile and nothing else. Lost money is reported to the payment provider, and copied code or text hosted on GitHub goes through the GitHub DMCA takedown form.

A fake account can take three different things from you: your face, your money, or your work. Each loss has its own desk, and the desks do not talk to each other. Grindr's moderators can ban a profile but cannot reverse a Zelle payment. A bank can refund a payment but cannot remove a profile. GitHub will disable a copied repository on a sworn copyright notice and will not look at an impersonation complaint sent through the same form.

This guide sorts eighteen report desks by what the fake took. It starts with the Grindr catfish report and the Grindr menu, moves through dating scams, payment apps, crypto sites, ads, app stores, resale marketplaces and chat apps, and ends with the GitHub DMCA takedown form for the cases where a fake is built from your own work. Every platform fact below was read on the platform's own page on 14 October 2026 unless the sentence names another source. Nothing here is legal advice.

Grindr catfish report or GitHub DMCA takedown form: which desk takes which fake?

The desk follows the loss. A profile that borrows a face goes to the platform's impersonation report. Money sent to a scammer goes to the bank or payment app first and the platform second. A fake built from your code, writing or photographs goes to a copyright desk, and for anything hosted on GitHub that desk is a sworn web form, not a report button.

A platform report, a payment claim and a copyright notice are read by three different companies, and none of them forwards a case to the others.

Most people file one report, at the place where they met the fake, and assume the rest follows. It does not. The table sets out what each desk in this guide can do and how long the reporter has. "Not stated" means the platform's page gives no figure.

How do you file a Grindr catfish report inside the app?

Open the profile, tap the block icon in the top-left corner, and choose Report from the pop-up menu. Grindr then shows seven categories. Pick one, describe what happened, tick where the offence appeared, decide whether to attach your recent chats, and submit. Grindr does not tell the reported profile who filed a Grindr catfish report.

The seven categories on Grindr's help page on blocking and reporting are Illegal Activity, Spam, Harassment or Bullying, Hate Speech/Discrimination, Nudity or Pornography, Underage, and Impersonation. Grindr describes the last one as the option to use "if anyone is pretending to be you or someone you know". No category is called catfish, fake profile or scam, which is why people searching for how Grindr report catfish cases work rarely find a matching button.

  1. Save the evidence before you report

Screenshot the profile, the photos and the chat, including any phone number, payment handle or link the person sent. Blocking a profile removes every chat with that profile from your inbox, so capture first.

  2. Choose the category

For a Grindr fake profile report, choose Impersonation when the photos belong to a real person you can name, and Spam when the profile is a script pushing links, payment requests or other apps.

  3. Say what happened

The "Tell Us What Happened" screen takes free text. Name the real person, say where the photos come from, and quote the message that asked for money. A moderator reads this field before deciding.

  4. Mark where the offence appeared

Grindr asks you to select all that apply: Profile Photo, Profile Information, Chat Message or Album content. Depending on the choice, the app offers to include your last 30 chats with the person.

  5. Review, submit, then block

Grindr states that "reporting a profile does not block it". Submit the report, read the confirmation screen, and then use Block. Grindr only lets you block a profile that has messaged you; otherwise the option is Hide.

Someone who is not on the app can still reach the desk. The same help page ends its reporting steps with a link for people who are "not currently using the app" to "report an issue via email instead", which opens a support request. That route matters when the person searching "Grindr report fake profile" is a partner, a parent or the person whose photos were taken.

What happens next is described on Grindr's page about how it moderates profiles. Grindr says it uses automated moderation and human review, that its moderators work "365 days a year, round the clock, in 6 different countries", and that team access to chat messages is restricted to cases where the chats are evidence. A Grindr moderation report fake profile case therefore goes better when the chats are attached, because the moderator may otherwise see only the profile.

Grindr took enforcement action on 94,604 profiles in one three-month period, and just over 80% of those cases were spam. "Scams" was not a separate enforcement category.Norton's summary of Grindr's 2025 transparency report to the Australian eSafety regulator

Grindr impersonation report: what if the fake profile is using your photos?

File the Grindr catfish report under Impersonation and name yourself as the person being copied. Grindr's moderation page says that "for profiles suspected of using fake photos or impersonating others, we require photo verification to continue using Grindr". The reported account is suspended until the account holder sends a selfie that a catfish cannot produce.

Banner reading Verified by selfie: one run halts at an open gate aperture while a second run passes through to the edge
An account opened by email holds up its email address; one opened through Apple, Google or Facebook holds up the device ID.

Grindr impersonation takes two forms. In the first, a scammer uses a stranger's photos to look real, and the stranger usually finds out from a friend. In the second, someone who knows you builds a profile in your name to send people to your home or workplace. The Grindr impersonation report is the same in both cases, but the second is a safety matter and belongs with the police as well.

The verification step is specific. Grindr's "Verifying your identity" page tells a reported user that the account has been "reported by another user for suspected impersonation" and is suspended until ownership is verified. An account created by email must send a selfie holding a piece of paper with the account's email address written on it. An account created through Apple, Google or Facebook must hold up the device ID. Grindr says the selfies are deleted after they are used.

That is the whole mechanism behind a Grindr impersonation takedown. A person using stolen photos cannot take a new selfie with the right face, so the profile stays suspended. A real user who was reported maliciously can pass in minutes. Grindr's support blog warns that knowingly filing a false report "can result in the reporter being banned".

The limit is that a ban removes one profile. Grindr's own help page notes that "Grindr users often create multiple profiles". The worst documented case is Herrick v. Grindr, filed in New York in 2017: an ex-partner ran fake profiles that sent more than 1,100 men to the plaintiff's home and workplace, according to the complaint. The courts dismissed the claims against Grindr under section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, and the Second Circuit affirmed in 2019. A platform report was the only tool, and it had to be repeated.

Photos stolen for one fake profile are usually reused elsewhere. Run a reverse image search and report each copy at its own desk: a Facebook impersonation report for a profile in your name there, the steps for reporting a fake Facebook account when the profile poses as nobody in particular, an impersonation report on X, and the form used to report an Instagram account that pretends to be you. Each of those desks asks for its own proof of identity.

Grindr scammer report: where does a sugar daddy scam go when the menu has no scam option?

A Grindr scammer report goes under Spam, with the payment request quoted in the description and the chat attached. Grindr's guidelines group "Spam, Scams, and Impersonation" together, and its transparency data counts scams inside spam. File the Grindr catfish report first, then report the account on whichever app the scammer moved the conversation to.

Grindr's scam awareness guide describes the pattern behind most Grindr sugar daddy scam report cases. The scammer offers an allowance, asks to connect on Cash App or Venmo "right away", then says a previous sugar baby betrayed them and asks for a small payment first to prove loyalty. A second version uses a stolen card to send the "allowance", claims to have overpaid, and asks for part of it back. The stolen-card payment is later reversed and the refund is gone.

The same guide explains why the Grindr report scammer step is only half the job. Scammers "know they will be banned on Grindr quickly, so they often try to move to email, text, etc. right away". By the time money is requested, the conversation is on another app. If that app is Telegram, report the Telegram account from inside the chat. If the number is on WhatsApp, the guide on when WhatsApp bans a number explains what a report there can do.

Blackmail changes the order of work. Grindr's guide says some sugar daddy scammers now threaten to send nudes or chats to a victim's contacts or employer. Do not pay, keep every message, report the profile, and report the threat to the police or to the FBI's IC3 in the United States. Payment tends to produce a second demand.

How to report a dating scammer on Hinge and other apps

The rule for how to report a dating scammer is the same on every app: report from inside the conversation while the match still exists. For a Hinge fake profile report, open the profile from the Matches tab, tap the three dots and choose Report. Hinge's help centre describes a report as "a confidential and permanent action", after which neither side sees the other again.

A Hinge romance scam report is harder after an unmatch, and scammers unmatch once they are paid. Hinge's help centre describes a Past Matches list in the Safety Center that covers people unmatched in roughly the last 30 days, shows only a first name and the unmatch date, and requires that at least one message was exchanged. Hinge calls the list a limited test that not every member can see. If the list is missing, the help centre's request form is the fallback.

In the first nine months of 2025 the FTC recorded 55,604 romance scam complaints, up 22% on the same period of 2024, with reported losses above $1.16 billion. The median loss in the third quarter was $2,218.FTC Consumer Sentinel Network figures, reported by Global Dating Insights, 26 February 2026

Dating apps are not where most of these scams begin. The FTC's data spotlight of 27 April 2026 said that about 60% of people who lost money to a romance scam in 2025 were first contacted on social media. When the first message came by video comment or direct message, the guide to reporting a TikTok scammer covers that desk.

How do I report a Zelle scam, a Cash App scammer or a Venmo scammer?

The answer to "how do I report a Zelle scam" is your own bank or credit union, by phone, on the day you notice. Zelle runs inside the bank's app, and the bank decides any refund. Cash App and Venmo payments are reported in each app's support section. In all three cases the report to the payment provider comes before the report to the dating app, because only the payment report is on a clock.

Banner reading Money runs on a clock: one run crosses the gate to the edge, another breaks into dots before reaching it
Regulation E caps liability at $50 only when an unauthorised transfer is reported within two business days.

Zelle's operator, Early Warning Services, said that from 30 June 2023 banks and credit unions on the network must reimburse customers for qualifying imposter scams. NBC News reported in November 2023 that the change covered about 2,100 financial firms and applied to scammers posing as a government agency, a bank or an existing service provider. A payment you chose to send to a dating contact is an authorised payment and may fall outside that policy, so say exactly how you were deceived.

A transfer made by someone who got into your account is a different case with firmer rules. Under Regulation E, a bank must refund an unauthorised electronic transfer, with the customer's liability capped at $50 if the customer reports within two business days, $500 after that, and no cap after 60 days from the statement. Ask the bank for a claim number and follow the call with a written dispute.

How to report a Cash App scammer has two parts. For the payment, tap the profile icon, then Support, then Report a Payment Issue, and select the payment, as Cash App's help article on recognising scams sets out. For the account, open the scammer's profile, scroll to the bottom and tap Report or Block. Cash App payments are instant, and a reported payment is reviewed, not automatically returned.

People who ask how to get a Venmo scammer banned are asking for a decision only Venmo makes. Phrased as a search, "how to get venmo scammer banned" has one honest answer: contact Venmo support through the app with the username, the amount and the date, block the user, and tell your bank or card issuer if a card funded the payment. Third-party guides agree that Venmo cannot cancel a payment once sent. This guide could not confirm Venmo's current in-app wording on Venmo's own help centre.

How to report a crypto scammer who took payment in coins is harder again, because nobody can reverse the transfer. Report the wallet address and transaction hash to the exchange you sent from, which can sometimes freeze funds that reach another exchange, and file with the FBI's IC3. Anyone who then offers to recover the coins for an upfront fee is running the next scam.

The FBI's IC3 recorded 181,565 cryptocurrency-related complaints in 2025 with reported losses of $11.366 billion, a 22% rise on 2024.FBI IC3 2025 Annual Report, as reported by The Block, April 2026

How to report a crypto scam website, a scam ad or a scam app

How to report a crypto scam website comes down to two reports made in parallel. The first goes to law enforcement: the FBI's IC3 and the FTC in the United States. The second goes to the companies keeping the site online, which are the domain registrar and the hosting provider. Only the second report can take the site down, and neither returns money.

A WHOIS lookup names the registrar, and the registrar's abuse address takes the complaint. ICANN's registrar agreement says a registrar with actionable evidence of DNS abuse "must promptly take the appropriate mitigation action(s)". The steps and the evidence a registrar expects are set out in the guide to a phishing site takedown. California residents can also file with the state's Department of Financial Protection and Innovation, which publishes a Crypto Scam Tracker.

California's Department of Justice took 42 fake cryptocurrency websites offline in 2024. Victims of those sites had lost at least $6.5 million, an average of $146,306 each.California Attorney General press release, 10 March 2025

How to report a scam ad depends on where the ad ran, because each ad network reviews only its own ads. On Google Search and YouTube, open the menu beside the ad and choose the report option, then pick the misleading or scam reason. On Facebook and Instagram, tap the three dots on the ad and choose Report ad. A scam promoted in an ordinary post is a content report, and the guide on how to report a single tweet shows that route on X.

Google blocked or removed more than 8.3 billion ads in 2025, including over 602 million tied to scam policies, and suspended more than 4 million advertiser accounts for scam-related activity.Google 2025 Ads Safety Report, published 17 April 2026

How to report a scam app to Apple starts at reportaproblem.apple.com. Sign in, choose the report option for a scam or fraud, pick the app from your purchase history and describe what the app did. The same page handles refund requests, which are a separate choice in the same menu. An app you never downloaded can be flagged from the "Report a Problem" link on the app's App Store page.

Apple said in May 2026 that it terminated 193,000 developer accounts over fraud concerns in 2025 and rejected more than 371,000 app submissions as copycats or misleading, according to BleepingComputer's report of the figures. Review catches most fakes before release. The ones that get through are usually clones of a real brand's app, and the brand's own complaint moves faster than a customer's.

How to report a scam seller on eBay, Vinted, Depop and Poshmark

On a resale marketplace the refund claim and the seller report are two separate actions, and the refund claim has the shorter deadline. Open the claim on the order first, inside the platform's window, then report the account. A payment made outside the platform's checkout is not covered by any of the four protection schemes.

How to report a scam seller on eBay: open the order under Purchase History and start a return or an "item not received" request, which is what triggers the Money Back Guarantee. The request must be made within 30 days of the actual or latest estimated delivery date, and the seller has 3 business days to respond before eBay can be asked to step in, according to eBay's community guidance. Reporting the seller from the seller's profile is a separate conduct report and refunds nothing.

How to report a scam on Vinted: open the order in your messages and press "I have an issue" within 2 days of delivery, then add photos. After 2 days the order completes and the seller is paid. How to report a scam on Poshmark follows the same logic with a 3-day window: My Purchases, the order, then the problem report with evidence. Posh Protect covers an item that never arrived or does not match the listing.

How to report a scammer on Depop: use the in-app report on the user or the order. Depop told Retail Gazette in May 2024 that buyers are eligible for a full refund under Depop Protection if they report the issue "within 30 days of the date of purchase". A buyer who was sent a fake payment link in chat should also tell their bank, since Depop Protection covers only payments made in the app.

The shortest of these windows is 48 hours. Open the parcel on the day it arrives.

How to report a scam on Signal, a scammer on Discord, or a Gmail impersonation

Chat apps and email take reports on a message or an address, and the reporter rarely hears back. Signal offers Report and Block on a conversation. Discord takes a report on the individual message. Google takes Gmail complaints through a web form and states that it will not mediate between the parties.

How to report a scam on Signal: open the conversation, tap Report, then Report and Block. Signal cannot read the message, so the report carries very little. Signal told BleepingComputer that the device sends only the phone number that started the conversation and a one-time anonymous message ID. Repeated reports against one number lead Signal to demand proof that the sender is human. Signal's support site adds that anyone claiming to be Signal support inside the app "is a SCAM".

How to report a scammer on Discord: press and hold the message on mobile, or right-click the message on desktop, choose Report Message and select the scam or spam reason. Discord acts on reported content, so a report with no message attached gives its reviewers little to assess. When the scam runs from a whole community, the guide to reporting a Discord server covers the server-level route.

How to report a Gmail account impersonation: use Google's form for reporting messages that violate Gmail's Program Policies, at support.google.com/mail/contact/abuse. The form asks for the sender's full address, the message and its headers, which Gmail shows under "Show original". Google's help pages say Google is "unable to participate in mediation involving third parties regarding impersonation" and suggest a report to IC3. Google does not tell the reporter what it decided.

An address that merely resembles yours breaks no rule until it is used to deceive someone. Report the specific message in which the sender claimed to be you, and warn the people who received it, since they hold the evidence.

How to report a fake profile on LinkedIn, and how to remove someone impersonating me on LinkedIn?

How to report a fake profile on LinkedIn: open the profile, click More, choose Report / Block, select the option to report the member or entire account, then choose "This person is impersonating someone" or "This account is not a real person" and submit. LinkedIn states that "reported members won't know who made the report".

Those five steps come from LinkedIn's help article on reporting fake profiles, and the mobile steps match. The general rule for how to report a fake profile on any network is visible in LinkedIn's two options: say whether the account copies a real person or represents nobody. The first claim can be checked against the real person's own account. The second depends on signals only the platform holds.

The question "how to remove someone impersonating me on LinkedIn" has a narrower answer. You can report the profile, and you can ask colleagues to report the profile, but only LinkedIn removes an account. LinkedIn's help article says nothing about people who have no LinkedIn account of their own, so someone impersonated there without being a member needs the help centre's contact form. The guide on taking down a LinkedIn account covers what LinkedIn asks for when a report stalls.

LinkedIn says 99.7% of the fake accounts stopped between July and December 2025 were stopped proactively, before any member reported the account, and 97.8% were stopped by automated defences.LinkedIn Community Report, July to December 2025

Those figures cut both ways. Member reports account for a small share of removals, which means the fake profiles members do see are the ones that already passed LinkedIn's automated checks. A report on one of those needs specifics: the real profile's address, the copied photo, the false employer.

When is the GitHub DMCA takedown form the right desk for a fake?

The GitHub DMCA takedown form is the right desk when the fake is made from your copyrighted work and sits on GitHub: a cloned repository republished under another name, your documentation or site copied into a GitHub Pages site, or your photographs used in a scam page hosted there. The form does not handle impersonation, trademark or scam complaints.

Banner reading Ownership, not identity: one run passes the gate while an offset run turns at a right angle and leaves
GitHub's copyright form never asks who the other person is, only which work is yours and where each copy sits.

This is where a guide about fake profiles meets a copyright form. A Grindr catfish report asks a moderator to judge who someone is. The GitHub DMCA takedown form asks nothing about identity. It asks for a sworn statement that you own a specific work and a list of the exact places where copies sit. Phishing kits and fake "official" downloads are often built by copying the real project, so the copyright route reaches them when an abuse report has not.

GitHub's form is at github.com/contact/dmca, with [email protected] as the alternative. GitHub's guide to submitting a notice asks the filer to list every infringing file unless the entire repository infringes, and treats each fork as a separate repository that has to be identified separately. Where only part of a repository infringes, GitHub gives the repository owner about one business day to remove the material before disabling the repository.

Three things about the GitHub DMCA takedown form surprise first-time filers. GitHub publishes the notices it acts on in a public repository, with personal contact details redacted, so the claim itself is public. The repository owner can send a counter notice, after which GitHub restores the content in 10 to 14 days unless the filer starts a court action. And a false statement in the notice carries liability under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f).

GitHub processed 2,661 DMCA takedown notices in 2025, and those notices affected 47,228 repositories.GIGAZINE, 21 April 2026, reporting GitHub's transparency data

A scam repository that copies nothing of yours needs a different door. GitHub handles trademark complaints under a separate policy and takes phishing and malware through its abuse report. The companion guide to a GitHub DMCA takedown service sets out what a notice puts on the public record before you sign one.

Copyright helps with catfish photos too, within limits. A selfie you took is your copyrighted work, so a site hosting copies outside any dating app can be sent a notice. The same reasoning supports a Telegram copyright complaint against a channel reposting your pictures, or a DMCA notice to X. A photo someone else took of you is their copyright, and that case goes back to the impersonation and privacy forms.

What can a report not do: bans, report volume and paid help?

A report cannot guarantee a ban, cannot return money, and does not count for more when it is sent many times. Each desk in this guide reviews a claim against its own rules. The outcome is the platform's decision, and no platform here publishes a number of reports that closes an account.

Banner reading Many reports, one claim: three runs meet the gate and a single line continues past it to the edge
Grindr's support blog says a knowingly false report can result in the reporter being banned.

Volume is the most common false hope. Grindr sends "all member reports" to its moderation team for evaluation, and a moderator who sees fifty copies of one Grindr catfish report still has one complaint to assess. The piece on what a TikTok report bot does describes the same limit on a larger platform, and services that sell mass reports against a dating profile are selling the same thing.

Bans follow rule breaches that a reviewer can see. That holds across the guides on what gets a TikTok account banned, on how Facebook decides to ban someone, and on the reports that lead to a Roblox ban. The guide to getting someone banned on TikTok makes the point with TikTok's strike rules: a ban is a count of confirmed violations, not a count of reports.

The second limit is money. A platform report and a refund are handled by different companies under different rules. A Grindr catfish report that ends in a ban returns nothing sent through a payment app, and waiting for the dating app's reply can cost the two business days in which a bank's liability rules are most favourable.

The third limit is the fake that comes back. A banned scammer registers again with a new number. Keep the first report's date, the screenshots and any reference number, because a second report that cites the first shows a pattern. Grindr's moderation page says it "may also take action to prevent future profiles from being created", and a documented pattern is what supports that step.

Paid help earns a fee in a narrow set of cases: the same fake appears on several platforms at once, the photos are spreading on sites with no report button, or the impersonation is aimed at a business. Clearline's content removal casework begins with a written list of which desk takes which copy and what each desk can decide. A service that promises a ban by a date is promising another company's decision.

Frequently asked questions

Does Grindr tell someone who reported their profile?

No. Grindr's moderation page says it will not share details of reports that may reveal who reported a profile, and a banned user may not be given the full reason for the ban. A reported profile suspected of impersonation is asked for photo verification, with no reporter named.

Can I file a Grindr catfish report without a Grindr account?

Yes. Grindr's help page on blocking and reporting ends its steps with a link for people who are not currently using the app to report an issue by email, which opens a support request. Include the profile's display name, location, screenshots and proof that the photos are yours.

Will reporting a scammer get my money back?

No. A platform report can remove a profile, an ad, an app or a listing. Money is recovered, when it is recovered at all, through the bank, the payment app or a marketplace's buyer protection claim, and each of those has its own deadline, as short as 2 days on Vinted.

Is the GitHub DMCA takedown form the right place to report impersonation?

No. The GitHub DMCA takedown form covers copyright only and requires a sworn statement that you own a specific work. Impersonation, trademark and phishing complaints go through GitHub's separate trademark policy and abuse report. The form fits when the fake repository or page copies your code, text or images.

How many reports does it take to get a fake profile banned?

No platform in this guide publishes a number. Grindr sends all member reports to its moderation team for evaluation, and a decision turns on whether a reviewer can see a rule breach. One report with screenshots, the real person's name and the chat attached does more than many empty ones.

What happens to a profile after a Grindr catfish report for impersonation?

If Grindr suspects the profile of using fake photos or impersonating someone, the account is suspended until the holder verifies ownership with a selfie holding a paper showing the account's email address or device ID. A profile built on stolen photos cannot pass, and a genuine user can.

A fake profile using your face, name or work?

Send the profile links, where your photos or files came from, and the dates of any reports already filed. The review sets out which desk takes each copy, what proof each desk asks for, and what none of them can do.
