How to report Instagram post, comment or story: one item, one route

Short answer. How to report Instagram post content: tap the three dots on the post, reel or story, tap Report and pick the reason that names the rule it breaks. How to report Instagram comment content: swipe left on it (iPhone) or press and hold it (Android), tap the exclamation mark and choose Report. Messages are reported from inside the chat. Instagram removes the item only if a reviewer finds a rule broken.

Every post, photo, reel, comment, story and message on Instagram has its own Report option, and a report reaches only the item it was filed from. The first decision is therefore the target, not the reason. A report on one comment says nothing about the account behind it, and a report on a profile does not put any single comment in front of a reviewer. When the whole profile is the problem, the guide to reporting an Instagram account covers that wider route.

This guide covers how to report Instagram post, comment, story and message content one item at a time, using Instagram’s Help Center as it read on 9 October 2026: which button, which reason, what happens after the tap, where the decision shows up, and what to do when the in-app report is not enough to get one post taken down.

Under the EU’s Digital Services Act, Instagram received 396,007 notices of allegedly illegal content between October 2023 and March 2024 and removed content in response to 92,938 of them, roughly one notice in four.Sekwenz, Wagner and de Bruijn, “From Reports to Reality”, arXiv, July 2025, analysing Instagram’s DSA transparency reports.

How to report Instagram post, photo or reel content

How to report Instagram post content in the app: tap the three dots above a feed post, or at the bottom right of a reel, tap Report and follow the prompts. A carousel is reported as one post; there is no separate Report option for a single photo inside it. On a computer, the three dots sit at the top right of the open post, and the steps are the same.

A profile report never carries a comment or a story with it; each item needs its own report.
  1. Copy the link and take a screenshot

Posts get edited, archived or deleted once a poster suspects a report. A link and a dated screenshot keep the evidence for a review request or a legal form later.

  2. Open the item’s own menu

Three dots above a feed post, at the bottom right of a reel, at the top of a story. Tap Report.

  3. Choose the reason that names the rule

Instagram’s Help Center lists nine reasons for a post, from “I just don’t like it” to intellectual property. The reviewer judges the post against the rule you name, so the table below matters more than the button.

  4. Finish the follow-up questions

Some reasons ask who the post is about or which kind of harm it shows. Answering that a post targets you is how Meta records a report from the person affected.

The short version of how to report someone post on Instagram from a link: open the link in the app, and the post’s own three-dot menu works exactly as it does in Feed. A post someone sends you in a direct message is reported the same way: tap the post to open it, then use its menu rather than reporting the message.

Reels follow the same rule. To report Instagram reel to remove one video, use the Options menu on the reel itself, not the profile’s, so the report names the video rather than the account. A reel that breaks no rule can still be kept out of recommendations, which is a separate decision from removal.

How to report Instagram comment content from the app or a computer

How to report Instagram comment content: open the comments, swipe left on the comment on iPhone or press and hold it on Android, tap the exclamation-mark icon and choose Report this comment, then pick a reason. On a computer, hover over the comment and click the three dots beside it. An Instagram comment report covers that one comment, not the account that wrote it.

Order matters when you work out how to report Instagram comment abuse under your own post: report first and delete second. Deleting it removes the comment for everyone, but the commenter faces no consequence and can post it again tomorrow. A report that ends in removal can count as a strike against the commenter’s account, and Meta’s strike rules say strikes stay on an account for one year.

If the report comment Instagram option seems to be missing, the comment may already sit under “View hidden comments”, where Hidden Words filters move offensive replies. Hidden comments can still be opened and reported. Under a reel, how to report Instagram comment content is the same swipe or press-and-hold inside the reel’s comment sheet, and the comment report leaves the reel itself untouched.

What happens if you report a comment on Instagram: the comment drops out of your own view while it is reviewed, the commenter is not told who reported it, and the decision appears in your Support Requests. If the comment breaks a rule it comes down for everyone. The companion guide on what one comment report reaches sets the comment, post and story buttons side by side.

How to report an Instagram story, and can you report it anonymously?

How to report a story on Instagram: open the story, tap the three dots at the top of the photo or video, choose Report (Report inappropriate on a computer) and follow the prompts. Report it while it is live, because a story disappears after 24 hours and a reviewer cannot judge what has expired. The poster is not told who filed the report.

Banner reading Report it while it is live: one run reaches the gate before the cut-off, a later dotted run ends short of it
A story saved to a Highlight stays reportable after 24 hours, from the Highlight on the profile.

The steps behind how to report someones story on Instagram do not change when the account is private, as long as the story is visible to you. Every attempt to report an Instagram story anonymously works the same as an ordinary report. Instagram’s Help Center says reports are anonymous except for intellectual property reports, and that “the account you reported won’t see who reported them.” Reporting does not add anything to the story’s viewer list beyond the view you already left by watching it.

That is how to report Instagram story anonymously in practice: the system hides the reporter, not the viewer. If only five people watched a Close Friends story, the poster can guess who reported it, whatever Instagram says. Screenshot the story before reporting, since the poster can delete it the moment it is reported and an expired story leaves nothing to show anyone.

To report someone Instagram story content that comes in a series, report each frame that breaks a rule; every story in a sequence is a separate item. What happens when you report a story on Instagram is otherwise the same as for a post: removal if it breaks a rule, nothing visible if it does not.

How to report Instagram message content or a whole chat

How to report Instagram message content: open the chat, press and hold the message, tap Report and pick a reason. To report a whole one-to-one conversation, open it, tap the name or More information at the top and choose Report; Instagram then reviews up to the 30 most recent messages. Group chats cannot be reported as a whole, only their messages, photos, videos and members.

Banner reading Thirty messages back: one chat run passes the review gate, an older run stops short of it
Threats older than the latest thirty messages need their own message-by-message reports.

Report Instagram direct message abuse from the chat, never only from the sender’s profile. Instagram’s help page on bullying says the team that reviews profiles has no access to direct messages. Deleted, unsent or edited messages can still be included when the whole chat or a surrounding message is reported, so an unsent threat is not necessarily gone. For repeated abuse, the harassment route for DMs and threats adds the police steps.

Replies to your story arrive in your inbox as messages, not as comments, so the how to report Instagram comment steps do not reach them. Report a story reply from the chat where it landed, the same way as any other message.

One menu catches people out. A report problem Instagram message filed through Settings, then Help, then Report a problem goes to the team that fixes bugs, not to moderators. Report a problem, which Instagram also opens when you shake your phone (a feature Adam Mosseri announced in 2021), is meant for broken features such as messages that will not send. When the problem is what a message says, report the message itself.

What does reporting a post on Instagram do?

Reporting a post on Instagram sends that one item for review against the Community Guidelines. Instagram hides or removes it if it breaks a rule and posts the decision in your Support Requests. If it breaks no rule it stays up, though Instagram may use the report to show you less content like it in Feed, Explore and Suggested Posts. The poster is not told who reported.

Item reportedIf it breaks a ruleIf it does not
Post or photoHidden or removed; the account can receive a strikeStays up; similar posts ranked lower for you
ReelRemoved from the profile and from ReelsStays up; can still be excluded from recommendations
StoryRemoved, if reviewed before it expiresExpires after 24 hours as normal
CommentRemoved for everyoneStays up, but hidden from your view
Message or chatAction on the sender’s accountNothing visible; blocking is still open to you

What happens when you report a reel on Instagram follows the post row, with one addition: Meta’s recommendation guidelines let it keep a borderline reel up while stopping it from being shown to people who do not follow the account. A removal is the stronger outcome, and it can also count against the account. The guide to the six outcomes of a report covers each of them.

Meta puts Instagram’s enforcement precision at about 92%, meaning roughly eight in every hundred actions it takes on Instagram content are mistakes by its own measure.Meta Transparency Center, Integrity Reports, updated 27 August 2026.

Report volume is not part of the decision. One report on a post that breaks a rule is enough, and a thousand reports on a post that breaks none do not change the answer, which is why strike counts, not report counts, decide what happens to an account. Who reviews also varies: Meta told EU regulators that every notice of illegal content filed under the Digital Services Act goes to manual review, a promise that does not extend to ordinary in-app reports.

Among UK 11–17-year-olds who reported harmful content on any platform, the share whose report led to the content being taken down fell from 41% to 27% between Ofcom’s two survey waves, while the share told the platform would look into it rose from 13% to 27%.Ofcom, “Children’s Online Experiences”, May 2026.

How to get someone's Instagram post deleted when a report is not enough

You cannot delete another person’s post yourself; only the poster or Instagram can. How to get someone's post deleted on Instagram comes down to three routes: a report under the rule the post breaks, a legal form when the post infringes your rights, or asking the poster directly. Paid mass reporting is not one of them, because reviewers judge content, not report volume.

The first route is the cheapest: knowing how to report Instagram post content under the right reason settles most cases without a form. The table below covers the routes for the posts it does not settle.

However the search is typed, “how to get someones post deleted on instagram”, “how to get someones instagram post deleted” or “how to get someone elses instagram post deleted”, the answer has the same three parts, and the right part depends on what the post does to you. Nobody can get someones Instagram post deleted just because they dislike it; the post has to break a rule or a law.

Banner reading The form, not the flag: a rights-form run passes the gate where the in-app report run stops

Trademark reportUses your registered brand to misleadYour name and email reach the poster
Privacy violation formShows you, or your details, without consentA form with your full name, country and email
Defamation reportStates something false and damaging about youA legal claim judged under local law
Court orderIs unlawful where you liveLegal fees and weeks to months

In the same six months, Instagram’s EU notices included 111,252 defamation complaints and 103,244 intellectual property complaints, two of the largest categories of legal notice it handles.Sekwenz, Wagner and de Bruijn, “From Reports to Reality”, arXiv, July 2025, Table 2, covering October 2023 to March 2024.

Defamation is the slowest of those routes, because Instagram cannot judge whether a statement is true and usually waits for a clear legal basis. Where a post is one of many from the same account, a formal Instagram takedown request puts the items in one filing. Where the posts have spread to search results and other sites, the work becomes content removal casework rather than a report. An account removal service works through these same routes; none can remove a post that breaks no rule and no law.

How to report someone on Instagram for using your photos

How to report someone on Instagram for using your photos depends on who owns the photo. A photo you took is your copyright, so file Instagram’s copyright report. A photo of you taken by someone else belongs to them, so the route is the privacy violation form, not copyright. Your photos used on a profile that pretends to be you is impersonation, reported from the profile itself.

The copyright route moves fastest but costs the most privacy. When Instagram removes content after a copyright report, it typically sends the poster the report number, the rights owner’s name, the email address the reporter gave, the details of the report and instructions for an appeal. Instagram’s own advice is to use a generic business or professional email for that reason.

When the photos sit on a profile built to pass as you, the guide to reporting a fake account built on your photos covers the identity check Instagram runs. Copies rarely stay on one app; if the same profile appears on X, X’s impersonation report works on similar proof.

Where to check report status, history and reviews

Open your profile, tap the menu at the top right, then Help, then Reports and violations, then Reports. Each entry shows the decision and, where it is allowed, a Request review button. Instagram says a second review usually happens within 24 hours. Not every report appears in the list, and for some types of content a review cannot be requested.

That menu is the whole answer to how to see account report history Instagram offers: there is no complete log, and Instagram warns that every report you’ve made may not be viewable there. Instagram’s own help pages still call the same screen Support Requests in places, so older guides using that name describe the same list.

Banner reading One more look, on request: a run branches below and passes the review gate a second time
A review request reopens the same item under the same rule; new context belongs in a fresh report.
  1. Open the decision

Reports and violations, then Reports, then the update Instagram sent about your report.

  2. Ask for the second look

Tap See report details, then Request review, then Continue twice and Submit request.

  3. Watch for the answer

If the second reviewer finds a mistake, Instagram says it will tell you and remove the content you reported.

In August 2024 more than 200,000 Facebook and Instagram decisions were eligible for appeal to the Oversight Board, and users submitted appeals for just over 220 of them.Meta Transparency Center, “Expanding User Appeals to the Oversight Board”, updated 19 February 2025.

When Instagram upholds its decision a second time, some cases can go to the Oversight Board. The Board picks only a small number of the appeals it receives, so treat it as a long shot for precedent rather than a route for one post.

When a single-item report is the wrong tool

Knowing how to report Instagram post content covers one item at a time. Report the account instead of the item when the whole profile exists to cause harm, when removed posts keep coming back, or when the profile is fake. Go to the police when a post threatens violence or demands money. And when the same post has been copied to other apps, report it on each one, because no platform acts on another platform’s decision.

A comment pile-on from dozens of accounts is the other case where the how to report Instagram comment steps fall short. Report the worst few comments individually, then turn on Limits, which Instagram says can hide comments and messages from accounts that don’t follow you or followed only in the last week.

Instagram content often moves to Facebook through cross-posting, where a Page can be taken down on the same Meta rules as described in taking down a Facebook Page, and a personal profile is reported as shown in the Facebook account report steps. On X a single post is reported much as on Instagram, which the guide to reporting a tweet walks through, and a whole profile there is handled through an X account report.

Scam reels often appear on TikTok in parallel, where the steps for reporting a TikTok scammer add the fraud authorities. Harassment that moves to Snapchat follows Snapchat’s own reporting flow. Sellers and impostors who shift the conversation to Telegram are reported inside that app, either as a Telegram account report or, for one person in a chat, using the steps for reporting someone on Telegram.

Not legal advice. Copyright, privacy and defamation rules differ by country, and a false statement in a copyright or trademark report can expose you to legal liability. If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number before filing any report.

Frequently asked questions

Will the person know I reported their post or comment?

No. Instagram says reports are anonymous and the account you reported won’t see who reported them. The exception is intellectual property: after a copyright or trademark removal, Instagram typically sends the poster the rights owner’s name and the reporter’s email address.

How to get someone else's Instagram post deleted if it shows me without permission?

If you took the photo, file Instagram’s copyright report. If someone else took it, use the privacy violation form in Instagram’s Help Center, which asks for your full name, country and email. Intimate images have a dedicated route through StopNCII.org as well as Instagram’s own reporting.

Can I report a comment on someone else’s Instagram post?

Yes. How to report Instagram comment content does not depend on whose post it sits under: the swipe or press-and-hold works on any comment you can see. Only deleting is limited, to comments on your own posts and comments you wrote yourself.

How many reports does it take to remove an Instagram post?

One, if the post breaks a rule. Instagram reviews the content against its Community Guidelines, not the number of people who flagged it, so many reports on a post that breaks no rule do not change the decision. The reason you pick when you work out how to report Instagram post content matters far more than the count.

Can I report an Instagram post without an account?

Partly. The in-app Report button needs an account, but Instagram’s Help Center has forms for people without one, including copyright, privacy and impersonation forms. For most other content, ask a friend with an account to report it and send them the link.

Why can’t I request a review of my report?

Instagram says some types of content cannot be reviewed a second time, and not every report appears in Reports and violations. If the review option is missing, file a new report under the reason that matches the content more closely.

Does reporting a story show up in the story’s viewer list?

No. The viewer list shows that you watched, which it would show anyway, but nothing marks you as the person who reported the story. On a story with very few viewers, the poster may still guess.

Reported the post and it is still up?

Send the link, the reason you chose and what Instagram replied. The review sets out which route is still open, what it needs from you, and where its limits are.
