Fake review removal: the proof each review desk accepts
Short answer. Fake review removal works when you prove a platform rule was broken, not when you prove the review is unfair. Every review site removes for conflicts of interest, no genuine customer relationship, incentives, duplicates and abuse. A false but genuine review needs a court order instead. Match the review to the right desk, file the evidence that desk actually reads, and expect a verdict in days to weeks.
Most failed fake review removal requests fail at the same point: the business owner explains why the review is wrong, and the moderator, who only checks guidelines, sees a customer dispute. Review desks are not courts. They do not decide who is telling the truth about a late delivery or a rude receptionist. They decide whether the post breaks a written rule, and they decide it from the evidence in front of them.
This guide sorts reviews into the three categories that decide which route applies, lists the evidence each major desk accepts, and gives the Tripadvisor process in full because Tripadvisor publishes more about its fraud work than any other platform, and a fake Tripadvisor review takedown is the request we see most from hotels and restaurants. The wider removal picture sits on our content removal service page.
What does fake review removal actually require?
Fake review removal requires evidence that a review breaks the platform's own content policy: the author never used the business, has a financial or personal stake, was paid or pressured, posted a duplicate, or wrote abuse. Platforms act on those grounds without deciding who is right. They do not act on a review simply because it is negative, exaggerated or unfair.
The distinction matters because the burden of proof changes with the ground. Showing that a reviewer has no booking, order or appointment in your records is a records check. Showing that a genuine customer lied about what happened is a factual dispute, and almost every review desk refuses to rule on factual disputes.
Tripadvisor stopped about 2.7 million fraudulent reviews in 2024, and review boosting, where owners or staff praise their own business, made up 54% of the fraud.Tripadvisor Review Transparency Report, 2025 edition
That second figure surprises business owners. Most fraud that platforms catch is fake praise, not fake attacks, so the detection systems are tuned for boosting patterns. A fake negative review written by one person from one account looks much like a genuine angry customer, which is why your evidence has to do the work the algorithm does not.
Fake, false or defamatory: which route fits the review?
A review falls into one of three categories, and each takes a different route. A fake review was written by someone who was never a customer, and it goes to the platform's fraud desk. A false review comes from a real customer who gets facts wrong, and it gets a public response. A defamatory review states provable falsehoods that cause harm, and it goes to court.
| Category | Typical signs | Route | What you must show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fake | No matching customer, new account, same wording across businesses, posted in a burst | Platform report or dispute form | No transaction, or a conflict of interest |
| False but genuine | Real customer, wrong dates or prices, angry tone | Public owner response; ask the reviewer to edit | Nothing the platform will weigh |
| Defamatory | Statements of fact that can be disproved and that cause harm, such as an invented crime | Lawyer's letter, then a court order against the poster | Falsity, publication and harm, before a judge |
| Rule-breaking | Names staff, shares private data, threats, slurs, off-topic | Platform report under the specific rule | The rule and the sentence that breaks it |
Many reviews sit in two rows at once. A review from a former employee posing as a customer is fake and may also be defamatory, and the platform route is faster, cheaper and does not require a lawsuit. Start with the platform and keep the legal route in reserve. Fake review removal and defamation claims can run in parallel. Our guide to removing defamatory content online covers the court side in depth.
What proof does each review desk accept?
Each review desk accepts a narrow set of evidence, and the list differs by platform. Booking and order records prove no customer relationship on travel and marketplace sites. Professional directories such as Avvo ask the reviewer to confirm the relationship. Employer sites never ask for proof at all and judge the text against their guidelines. File the evidence the desk reads and leave out the rest.
The table below compiles each platform's published process with the details that change how you file. Policies change without notice, so check the linked help page before you submit.
| Platform | Where to file | Evidence that moves the desk | What happens next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tripadvisor | Management Center, Reviews, "Concerned about a review?" | No booking or stay record; a competitor or staff link; incentive offered | Moderator decision; fraud can trigger a penalty notice on the boosting business |
| Amazon | Report on the review; Brand Registry "Report a Violation" for brand owners | Reviewer bought nothing, review is about the seller not the product, incentive offer | No reporter notice; the abuse team investigates |
| Google Play | More, then "Flag as inappropriate" | Repeated postings, multiple accounts, rating manipulation | Author gets an email with the reason and may appeal |
| Capterra | Vendor portal or [email protected] | Reviewer never used the product, competitor or employee author | Removal also clears GetApp and Software Advice |
| Indeed | Three dots, "Report review", pick the reason | Paid or pressured reviewer; facts stated about the company rather than experience | Checked in 1 to 2 business days; reporter not told the outcome |
| Avvo | Attorney dispute on the review | No client or consultation relationship | Review hidden while Avvo asks the reviewer to confirm |
| GreatSchools | Blue "report" link below the review | Named staff, duplicate within 9 months, impersonation | No reply promised to reporters |
| PissedConsumer | Court order or notarized letter from the poster | Order against the actual poster; signed admission | Document review of up to 2 weeks |
Trustpilot removed 4.5 million fake reviews in 2024, 7.4% of everything submitted, and 90% of those were caught by automated systems.Trustpilot Trust Report, 2025
The automation share is the useful number for fake review removal. Nine in ten fake reviews come down without anyone filing a report, so the reviews left for you to report are the ones that passed the filters. A report that repeats "this is fake" adds nothing the filter has not already weighed. A report that adds an order number search, a staff roster match or a date the business was closed gives the moderator something the filter could not see.
How to get fake reviews removed from Tripadvisor: a fake Tripadvisor review takedown, step by step
To get fake reviews removed from Tripadvisor, sign in to the Management Center as the verified owner or manager, open Reviews, choose the review and select "Concerned about a review?". State which guideline it breaks, attach evidence such as the booking ledger for the stated date, and submit. A fake Tripadvisor review takedown is decided by moderators, usually within a few business days.
Claim the listing first
Only a registered owner or manager account sees the reporting form. A request from a personal traveller account goes to a general queue with no owner context.
Capture the review before you report
Screenshot the review, the reviewer profile and its other contributions, with the date visible. If the review comes down or the reviewer edits it, the capture is your only record.
Match the claim to your records
Check the stated visit month against reservations, room assignments or covers. "No guest under any name stayed in a room type that matches on those dates" is the sentence moderators can verify.
Name the guideline
Tripadvisor treats reviews from anyone with a financial stake, reviews written for incentives and reviews about experiences that never happened as fraud. Quote the category instead of describing your frustration.
Escalate once, with new facts
If the first request fails, a second request repeating the same argument fails too. Escalate only when you have new evidence, such as the same account reviewing three rival hotels on the same night.
About 87.8% of 2024 Tripadvisor reviews met the automated posting standards, 7.3% were rejected automatically and 4.9% went to human moderators; more than 200,000 suspected AI-written reviews were removed.Tripadvisor Review Transparency Report, 2025 edition
Even a well-built fake Tripadvisor review takedown can fail with good evidence, because the moderator may decide a guest stayed under a partner's name. Tripadvisor keeps the final decision and does not explain it in detail. When the review is plainly genuine but wrong, the owner response is the remaining tool, and a calm, specific response is read by the next guest more often than the review is reread.
Fake review removal on Amazon, app stores and software directories
On Amazon, app stores and software directories, fake reviews come down through the platform's own report path, and the reviewer is rarely told who complained. To remove fake Amazon reviews, use the report link or Brand Registry. To get fake app reviews removed, flag them in the store. Capterra and G2 take vendor requests through support, with evidence the reviewer never used the product.
How to remove fake reviews on Amazon
Sellers cannot delete reviews. Amazon's rules ban reviews written for compensation, reviews by people with a financial interest, and reviews about seller or shipping experience in the product review section, so those are the grounds to cite. Brand owners get the stronger route through Brand Registry's "Report a Violation" tool. Everyone else reports the review and opens a Seller Support case under product reviews.
Amazon says it blocked more than 275 million suspected fake reviews in 2024 and took legal action against 115 fake review brokers over two years.Amazon, 2024 brand protection reporting
The limit is that Amazon does not report outcomes. A review that stays up after a report may still be under investigation, or Amazon may have decided the buyer is real. Do not contact the reviewer to offer a refund for removal: Amazon treats that as review manipulation by the seller.
How to get fake app reviews removed
Google Play's policy names fake reviews, repeated postings, reviews from multiple accounts and rating manipulation as violations. Developers flag them from the review through More, then "Flag as inappropriate". When Google removes a review, the author gets an email with the reason and can appeal, which means a removal can be reversed. A play store review removal service cannot do more than this flag and a developer support request, so judge any vendor by its evidence work, not by promised access.
How to remove a fake Capterra review
Capterra takes removal requests through the vendor portal or [email protected]; there is no public button behind the search "flag fake review Capterra". To flag a fake review there, give the reviewer's stated company and role and show they never held an account, or show that the reviewer works for a competitor. The same request covers anyone asking how to report fake Capterra reviews in bulk: send one message per review, each with its own evidence. A removal from Capterra also clears the copy shown on GetApp and Software Advice, which share the review network.
Vendors who want to remove fake Capterra reviews in bulk usually find that a pattern, such as five reviews from one email domain in one week, persuades more than five separate complaints. Remove fake Capterra review cases one ticket at a time if the reviews are unrelated, and as one pattern report if they share a source.
G2 review removal service claims
G2 runs fraud detection that looks for employees reviewing their own company or a competitor, and it may ask a reviewer for screenshots that prove product use. Vendors raise concerns through their account or G2 Support. A g2 review removal service has no route beyond that, so a vendor that promises a guaranteed takedown is describing a support ticket it will write for you.
Employers, schools, doctors and lawyers
Employer, school, medical and legal review sites protect anonymous reviewers more than consumer sites do. Glassdoor and Indeed remove reviews only for guideline breaches and never for payment. Healthgrades and RealSelf weigh patient privacy. Avvo hides a disputed review while it asks the reviewer to confirm. GreatSchools removes reviews that name staff or repeat within nine months.
Glassdoor and Indeed
Glassdoor states that employers cannot pay to have reviews removed, and that flagging a review for moderation is something anyone can do free through a Glassdoor account. A glassdoor review removal service that charges to "flag" a review is selling a free button. The grounds that work are named non-executive staff, confidential business information, threats, and reviews that show the author never worked there.
Indeed removes reviews when there is evidence the reviewer was paid or pressured, and it excludes calls for action against the company and content unrelated to working there. Reports go through the three dots on the review. Indeed checks reported content within 1 to 2 business days and does not tell the reporter the outcome, so an indeed review removal service cannot show you a status page either. An indeed review takedown service that promises a timeline faster than Indeed's own queue is guessing.
How to report a GreatSchools review
To report a GreatSchools review, click the blue "report" link below it and state which guideline it breaks. GreatSchools allows one review per person per school every nine months, removes reviews that disparage named staff, and can remove a review over one offending sentence. A greatschools review removal service works through the same report link; the school leader account adds the right to respond publicly.
Healthgrades and RealSelf
To get reviews removed from Healthgrades, use the flag on the review and cite inappropriate language, personal attacks, threats or a reviewer who was never a patient. The constraint is privacy law: a provider who replies with treatment details to prove a patient wrong can breach HIPAA, so the evidence goes to the platform privately, never into a public reply. RealSelf fake review removal follows the same rule. RealSelf screens reviews before posting with software and a moderator, so a dispute should show what the screening could not know, such as no consultation record under any matching name or date.
How to report an Avvo review
Avvo accepts reviews only from people who contacted, consulted or hired the attorney, and its team reads each review before publication. An attorney searching how to report Avvo review posts uses the dispute process on the profile. Avvo then contacts the reviewer to confirm they were a real or potential client and lets them edit or delete the review; while the dispute runs, the review is hidden. A reviewer who confirms gets the review reposted, so the dispute only removes reviews whose authors stay silent or admit no relationship.
Local trades, car dealers, landlords and the BBB
Local service reviews are where competitor-written fakes concentrate and where fake review removal is most often requested, because one rival's rating affects the next booking directly. Angi, DealerRater, Google and the BBB each remove reviews from people with no genuine transaction. The evidence is a job log, a sales record or a lease file that shows no match for the reviewer's name, address or stated date.
How to remove fake reviews from Angi
To remove fake Angi review posts, compare the reviewer's project details with your job records, then dispute the review through the Angi pro account with that comparison attached. Trade guides report that flagging and disputing sit with the pro account, so the listing has to be claimed first. To remove competitor fake Angi review posts, add what ties the account to the rival: a shared phone area, a review posted the day after a lost bid, or the same author praising the competitor. A claim that a competitor wrote it, with nothing to show the link, reads as a customer dispute.
Junk removal service reviews websites and other trades
Small trades are reviewed on more sites than owners track. A junk removal company, for example, appears on the junk removal service reviews websites customers actually use: Google, Yelp, Angi, Thumbtack, Nextdoor and the BBB. A fake review campaign usually hits two or three of them in the same week, and the cross-site timing is evidence in itself. Collect it in one dated log before reporting on any single site.
Remove fake car dealer reviews
DealerRater lists five report reasons: duplicate, former employee, fraudulent, incorrect dealer and other. It also bars reviews from anyone with a dealer or manufacturer affiliation now or in the previous five years, and it moderates Cars.com dealer reviews too. To remove fake car dealer reviews, check the stated purchase against the deal file and the sales roster, then choose "fraudulent" or "former employee" with that detail.
Fake tenant and resident reviews
Apartment communities and landlords get fake reviews from people who never signed a lease, and occasionally from rival properties. Landlords who need to flag fake tenant review posts should check the stated unit, move-in month and name against the rent roll, then report it on the review site under the no-genuine-experience rule. Keep the tenant's privacy intact in any public reply: confirming who lived where is a disclosure risk of its own.
Remove fake BBB reviews
BBB does not accept anonymous or third-party reviews, requires every reviewer to verify an email address, and has staff vet reviews before posting. To remove fake BBB reviews, show the reviewer was never a customer; BBB can label a review from a confirmed customer as a verified reviewer, so a business that cannot find the customer has a direct ground to challenge it. Our guide to which review sites remove what covers the BBB complaint process separately.
To remove fake business reviews on Google itself, the report runs through the Business Profile, and Google says factual disagreement is not a ground. The details sit in our Google review removal guide.
Review bombs and coordinated attacks
A review bomb is a burst of ratings from people reacting to news, a post or a campaign rather than to a purchase. For fake review removal, platforms treat a review bomb as one event, not hundreds of reviews. The useful evidence is the shape of the burst: the date it starts, the source that triggered it, and accounts with no history before that day.
Goodreads introduced the ability to temporarily limit ratings and reviews on a book during unusually high activity, and said it was removing ratings and reviews added during previous episodes that broke its guidelines. A goodreads review bomb removal service cannot switch that limit on. What an author or publisher can do is report the event early with the triggering link and the first-hour timestamps, which is the same evidence Goodreads uses to decide whether activity is unusual.
Coordinated attacks are often organised in public. When the call to post reviews sits in a forum thread, the thread itself is removable under harassment rules, and a Reddit post removal request can take down the organising post while the review platform handles the ratings. When the campaign also runs through a set of throwaway social accounts, the same pattern evidence supports an Instagram fake account removal, and individual posts repeating the claims can be reported through Instagram's post reporting menu.
When a competitor wrote the review: the legal route
When a competitor wrote fake reviews, the legal route is a lawsuit that identifies the anonymous author through a subpoena, followed by a court order the review site will honour. United States courts have treated competitor-written fake reviews as defamation and as false advertising under the Lanham Act. A lawsuit is slow and costly, so use it when platform-level fake review removal fails and the harm is large.
Most US review sites will not remove a review on a lawyer's letter alone, because Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act shields them from liability for user posts. They act on court orders. PissedConsumer states that it removes reviews in response to a court order against the actual poster, or a notarized letter from the poster admitting the review was incorrect, and that its document review can take up to two weeks. A pissedconsumer review removal service cannot shortcut either document.
PissedConsumer's arbitration for businesses was reported at $2,000, and a successful arbitration redacts the false statements while the review itself stays on the site.Truth in Advertising, 2021
Some fakes are not reviews of your business at all but reviews written by someone posing as your business, replying to customers or offering refunds. That is impersonation and runs through a different desk; see our guide to impersonation takedowns. A fake reviewer persona built from stolen photos follows the same verification logic as a catfish profile report: reverse-image the profile photo and file the original. When the fake review copies your own photos or text, a DMCA takedown of the copied page is often faster than any review policy, and copied listings hosted in a public code repository go through a GitHub DMCA notice.
How to vet a fake review removal service
A legitimate fake review removal service builds the evidence file, files through the platform's published channels and tells you which reviews will not qualify. A service that guarantees removal, asks for your platform password, promises insider contacts or offers to "bury" reviews with new positive ones is selling something the platforms ban or the law penalises.
The FTC sent warning letters to 10 companies on 22 December 2025, the first public enforcement under the Consumer Review Rule, which carries civil penalties of up to $53,088 per violation.FTC warning letters, December 2025, via Benesch and Crowell client alerts
The rule bans fake reviews, undisclosed insider reviews, review suppression and sentiment-linked incentives. A vendor that offers to post positive reviews to drown out the negative ones exposes the business, not just itself. Ask any vendor which of your reviews it expects to fail; a firm that says "all of them will come down" has not read them.
Read the vendor's own reputation with the same suspicion. Mugshot removal service reviews are a useful warning: a 2017 Stateline survey found 18 states had passed laws aimed at mugshot sites, many banning removal fees, because sites were paired with "removal" businesses charging people to unpublish the same photos. Some review-removal sellers copy that pattern, and fake "platform compliance" emails demanding a fee to clear reviews are a known phishing lure. Our phishing takedown guide explains how to report those pages.
When will fake review removal fail?
Fake review removal fails when the reviewer can plausibly be a customer, when the review states opinion rather than fact, or when the only evidence is the business owner's word. Platforms also refuse to reopen rejected requests without new evidence, and a removed review can return if the author appeals or reposts from a new account.
- Plausible customers. A guest who booked through a third party or under a partner's name will not match your records, and moderators know it.
- Opinion. "The worst service I have ever had" cannot be proven false, so neither the platform nor a court will treat it as defamation.
- Appeals. Google Play tells authors why a review was removed and lets them appeal, and an Avvo reviewer who confirms the relationship gets the review back.
- Overseas and anonymous posters. A court order against an unidentified poster outside your jurisdiction may never be obtainable.
- Search copies. Aggregators and scraped copies can outlive the original, so check search results after the platform acts.
When fake review removal is unlikely, the honest options are a factual owner response, a request that the reviewer edit, and steady genuine reviews from real customers, collected without incentives tied to positive sentiment.
Frequently asked questions
Can a business delete a fake review itself?
No major review platform lets a business delete a review. Tripadvisor, Amazon, Glassdoor, Indeed, Google Play and the BBB all decide removals themselves after a report, and only the reviewer can delete their own post. A business controls the evidence it files and its public response.
How long does fake review removal take?
Indeed checks reported reviews within 1 to 2 business days, Tripadvisor moderators usually decide within a few business days, and PissedConsumer reviews court orders or notarized letters in up to two weeks. Court routes take months. Platforms rarely notify the reporter, so check the review page directly.
What evidence proves a review is fake?
The strongest evidence shows no customer relationship: no booking, order, appointment, lease or job record matching the reviewer's name, date or details. A link between the reviewer and a competitor, the same text posted on several sites, or a burst of reviews from new accounts also counts.
Is a false review from a real customer removable?
Usually not by the platform. Review sites do not judge factual disputes between a business and a genuine customer. The options are a factual public response, asking the customer to edit, or, if the review states harmful provable falsehoods, a defamation claim that ends in a court order.
Is it legal to pay a company to remove reviews?
Paying a firm for fake review removal work, meaning preparing and filing legitimate reports, is legal. Paying for fake positive reviews, review suppression or incentives tied to positive sentiment breaks the FTC Consumer Review Rule, with penalties of up to $53,088 per violation. Glassdoor states employers cannot pay it to remove reviews.
A fake review is costing you bookings?
Send us the review links. We check each one against the platform's rules, tell you which will qualify for removal and which will not, and build the evidence file for the ones that can.
